  • After the garlic

    Hi all,
I have garlic and onions in a raised bed. Once this has been harvested, I would like to plant brassicas for winter. Brussels sprout and winter cabbage. Will this be OK or will the onions and garlic have taken the nutrients that the brassicas need? Also, what would you suggest to grow? The bed is over a foot deep and about 4 ft square.

Garlic and onions will be fine.

I am harvesting the odd garlic amongst the patch [see my update on progress in the allium thread], and planting a tomato plant in its space.

Many thanks, I don't have too much space and I want to get the best out of it.

Dig in some well rotted manure, and lime it first. I read your post the other way round......always feed and lime and give it a good mix in before ANY brassicas....

If no manure, then chicken pellets - if not that then home made compost [which is what I use].

You could plant some carrots in there Ian. If they're not ready at the back end cover them with some straw or something and overwinter them in the ground.
If you like it Kale will fill that space and give you greens all winter.
Or PSB to give you brocolli in the spring.
You could plant your sprouts and cabbage if you have them grown on in modules - or leeks which you have started in a pot. The ground won't be exhausted and you can always feed it.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Thanks for the answers guys. Zazen999, is there still a risk with Aminopyrilids and manure? I have sheep manure which I am suspending in water to make feed and hopefully wll have a trailer load of mushroom compost in the next couple of weeks so I guess that would be good and maybe get some mushrooms too
