  • I Robot!

Twas my birthday the other day - allegedly my family didn't know what to get me so to play safe they got nowt! ;(

Anyroad, I've had a hankering for some artificial intelligence in my life as we're bereft of any real intelligence in this household. So Prime Day cometh and I bought an 'Echo Dot' from Amazon so that they and the CIA can listen in to what goes on in my kitchen.

It arrived today along with a £3.80 pond pump from China (but that's an aside, we won't go there except to say its pumping many litres of water over a gravel bed in my wildlife pond in order to try to clean it up).

Back to the Echo - I was a little worried that I'd not actually use it much - but can happily report that whilst hands deep in pizza dough I was able to successfully command Alexa to switch from 'Celtic Frost' to 'the Smiths' without having to wash my hands (or risk dough in the amp controls) - splendid.

This is how skynet really started.

To bring this back on track:
What robotic devices / AI do you use in the garden/allotment?

At home I have a robotic vacuum cleaner. It's ok but keeps getting itself stuck and the battery doesn't last that long now. It's a toss up as to which is worst, the vacuum or the cleaner it was supposed to replace although at least with Mrs Mop I didn't have fish her out from under the sofa.

Nothing at the allotment other than use of I-player for selective radio listening. I did see there was a robot now available that ate weeds but we don't have power and the odd break in so that seems like a futile experiment.

Now as we are not allowed to use hose pipes if I could get a robot to do the watering that would be great.

The only robot here is me but I don't know how to use a hoover
My last car had radio/CD controls on the steering wheel and it was great to be able to change stations & tracks without taking my hands off the wheel.
I took my 90+ year old Mum out for a ride in it and told her that the radio was voice controlled and that she could tell it what to do.
Mum, what do you want to hear, radio or CD
        Radio!
OK Mum, look at the radio and say clearly "Radio please"
So she did and, by magic, the radio played!
Is it loud enough Mum? If not say "Louder please"
So she did but nothing happened!
Mum, if you want it Louder, you have to shout Louder, for quieter, you whisper.

This went on for ages, I was trying not to laugh as she sat there shouting at the radio.
Then she realised something was wrong, it may have been the tears rolling down my cheeks and my shoulders shaking

Shes never let me forget it

        As you were............

I don't have anything robotic but my wife thinks she has, and its a voice control getmegofor as that's what I get all the time, "get me" or "go for" and VC Hoover's are easy (I think) as my OH can do it with one hand
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

                    ^^ Good grief!

                    Have you made one, Cadalot?

The AI in our household is probably me. Does that count?!
