  • How long to leave it?

We have just moved into our new house and there is a medium sized plum at the bottom of the garden but the previous owners said it hadn't fruited for a few years.
How long would you leave it before calling it quits?
    Thanks

May need another pollinator. or they have over pruned it? Perhaps if you feed it , it may produce fruit next year. Not an expert on fruit!

I would identify it and prune it and see if this reinvigorates it, give it a good feed with potash. It may also need a pollinator, by identifying it you will be able to discover whether it needs a pollinating partner. Old trees, don't mean useless trees, sometimes it just comes down to bad pruning or pruning at the wrong time of year.

        Thanks Nicos
They were an elderly couple and it certainly doesn't look overpruned so I suppose it can't hurt feeding it or providing a pollinator
Sorry to sound thick - does it need to be a plum to pollinate?
        thanks

Most plums can also be pollinated by a Damson or a Greengage. A good idea if you want a little variety.

Thanks - a damson sounds good - best just find some more room in the garden!

You can grow it as fan, so it won't take up as much room and can be grown against a wall or fence, preferably south facing.
