  • Storing Potatoes - paper bags or hessian?

Hi, I'm thinking ahead to how i'm going to store my 5 buckets of maincrop potatoes and a row in my raised bed.

I'm not sure whether to buy paper bags or hessian sacks to store my potatoes in, is there any difference or would one of those cotton blacked inner potato bags from the catalogues through the door work just as well?

Any comments welcome. Thanks in advance.

I use thick paper sacks, 30p each from Scats Country Stores.

      Pro's & Con's.

      Hessian.
      Breathes easily.
Are as thin as net curtains (T&M and Suttons are at any rate) so let light in.

      Paper.
      Does not breathe as easily.
      Does block light.

It is important to let the spuds have an hour or two's sunbathe prior to bagging. Doubly important to bag them dry, especially in paper sacks.

I put my paper sacks in the tumble dryer for 30 secs before I use them to make sure they are totally dry. Helps stop the tats going off.

                        Hessian sacks, clean or dirty?

Hello I know this thread was started some years ago! I just googled "hessian sacks potatoes" as I have decided to store my potatoes in hessian sacks this year. I live on the Scottish borders so being so far north we can get lots of wet weather and would rather not leave them in the soil.
My big question is do I have to clean the potatoes before storing them or can they go in soily? I know they have to be dry.

                        Thanks!

They don't have to be washed clean, but I'd rub the worst of the loose soil off before bagging.

Hessian bags every time for main storage, they last years and are much stronger than paper. Use small bags for the ones in the kitchen veg rack but hessian in the garage, breathable, strong, reusable and if you get decent ones they block the light out well.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
