  • Grapevine pest or disease HELP please

I have a problem with an old grapevine in a pot. Budburst was about 10 days ago and the leaves are puckering quite badly. There are brown lesions and holes on the new leaves. The stems are covered with something which looks like candyfloss along with the underside of the leaves. Can anyone please help, as I have gone through everything from mealybugs (no evidence of mites) to phomopsis!

How long have you had the vine, and is this the first time you've had a problem with it?

I have had it about 3 years and its the first time its looking like this right after bud burst. The leaves started yellowing a bit early last year but I put that down to the bad weather.

You say it's in a pot. How big a pot, and have you ever fed it, or put new soil/compost on as a top-dressing?

The very fine "hairs" are normal on new growth.

To be honest a pot is not the best place for a Vine.

Its in a really big pot and yes I have fed it and put new compost on top. I realise that a pot is not ideal but we rent at the moment and I am not planting it in someone elses garden!

Fairy snuff I don't think there's anything seriously wrong with the vine, but keep an eye on it. Do you get many grapes from it?

Only experience I have with grape vines is my dad's when I was a child. I do remember them slightly furry as we used to like stroking them. Could the holes be damage from the buds before they opened?
