What can I paint these buckets with?

    What can I paint these buckets with?

    I've got some big white plastic buckets (free from work) that I'm going to make into self waterers, but they are so persil white that they will look stark in the garden. Is there a type of paint I can use that will stick to the plastic, but not peel off after a week, and will withstand the weather, to will tone down their brilliance?

    I seem to remember that you can mix PVA glue with paint to make it stick, but PVA isn't waterproof, so would it work outside?

    No PVA would just wash off.

    I'm going to watch this thread as we are painting our daleks as ladybirds at some point, we have about 10 to do.

        Goggling around the suggestion seems to be -
        1. wipe down with white spirit to clean and degrease
        2. Paint with slightly thinned exterior gloss paint (no undercoat).

              Yes thanks! I'm going to try both those and see which one would be the most cost effective.

              Luckily, my chums' partner is a tutor in graf arts so he should be able to tell me the cheapest place to get spray paint.

                There must be a lot of disheartened folk around then - staring at their peeling pipework
                That spray on stuff looks good - wonder how much it costs per bucket!!

                    Your "free" plastic bucket planter may end up more expensive than buying the real thing!!

                      White spirit (aka turpentine substitute) is a reasonable cleansing agent but it does contain a very small amount of oil,so after washing plastic with it (which will remove most of the mould release agent) you need to wash again to remove the said oil residue that is left by the white spirit,as pretty well all the really volatile degreasing chemicals are subject H&S restrictions a good going over with very hot water & sugar soap is probably the best option.

                      Gloss paint is used because it has a greater amount of "specific adhesion" than undercoat or general purpose primer,also oil based gloss paint has far more "elasticity" than modern water based gloss paint.

                        If you are happy to have black buckets the easiest way is to give them a thorough degrease & then give a couple of coats of bumper paint which is specifically formulated for the job


                        Halfords | Halfords Plastic Bumper Paint Black 300ml .. or similar

                            I had some big blue barrels, and roughed them up with a wire brush before painting them green, with shed paint. However, the paint only lasted a couple of years before chipping off. I would wrap them in sacking, personally.

                              I might consider this BB. I'll check it out anyway - never heard of it before - have a car but don't do "maintenance" on it, putting go-juice in is the limit of my capability in that direction
