  • Playing with my new camera!

Been waiting for the rain to stop to get outside and take some flower pics. Bluebells are lovely but we could do with some sunshine!
    What do you think?

    (Hope this has worked)

Thanks! I'm learning myself CS. I have a Canon EOS 500D. I love it! I've wanted to get my head around ISO's, F stops and apertures for ages and am really enjoying experimenting. I bought the Dummies Guide book and it's been really useful and a mag/book from big supermarket which has lots of useful info.
What I'm really looking forward to doing is some slow shutter speed water shots when we go away to Devon soon. Gotta invest in a tripod and learn how to use it before we go away so I don't look a complete ejit!

Very nice indeed, the bluebell carpeted woodland looks beautifully serene.

If I may offer one little snippet of advice, when there's no specific point of focus - as in the bluebell woodland scene, a smaller aperture would increase the depth-of-field thereby bringing more of the scene into focus. A slower shutter speed or higher ISO would be required to let more light in as a small aperture obviously reduces the amount of light entering the camera.

The other picture is spot on, the wide aperture reduces depth-of-field and makes the flower stand out in sharp contrast to the defocussed background.

Have a lot of fun with it and please post more pictures. If my constructive criticism isn't welcome then feel free to say so and I'll keep my gob shut...I'm thick-skinned and won't be upset
Tried and Tested...but the results are inconclusive

Can I also add that the Rule of Thirds is helpful in composing the shot. You'd be surprised how much better the picture can be, your lovely bluebells might be improved by placing the horizon two thirds up rather than in the middle. Some cameras come with the 9 square grid as an option to show on the display.

ETA: Just looked it up and your camera does have the option in the live view display.

Indeed, that's a very valuable thing to keep in mind.

As an alternative, placing the horizon line one third up would add a great deal of perspective to the trees, showing off their towering majesty.

The beauty of digital technology is that you can try every conceivable option and delete all but the best results.
