  • Casseille - has anyone bought one?

    I have a £20 voucher from T&M which I intend to spend before the free P&P runs out tomorrow, but I'm undecided what to go for. Reading about the Casseille bush, a cross between a blackcurrant and gooseberry sounds nice, but is it all hype? Searching the net suggests it might be, some French sites say the flavour is smooth and sour, others sites suggest it's just another name for a Jostaberry, whereas T&M make is sound great, so..... anyone got one, and if so, what do you think of it?
    I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

    I have one but can't help as I only got it last autumn. I have it in a pot at the moment and it is shooting well so fingers crossed.

      I got one also that arrived in the autumn. Its only got a few shoots coming off it at the moment so wont know what it tastes like for another year or so maybe?

      I also potted up the cuttings off it when i cut it right down and those seem to be doing ok too!

        There you go BS, cadge a cutting off bharper1 & spend your £20 on something else.....or is that just a yorkshireman being tight again........

          Hi Barley Sugar - I reckon this is just another marketing ploy on behalf of our plant breeders! If my schoolgirl French is correct the name Casseille is a combination of cassis (blackcurrant) and groseille (gooseberry). So that would be a Jostaberry then.
          Just like a Tayberry and a Loganberry are raspberries crossed with blackberries. I'm sure that there is a difference in flavour but I would be hard pushed to tell one from t'other!
          Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

            maybe it's just a French Variety???

            Thing is- they will be different because the parent plants will be different. Just think of how many varieties of goosgogs and blackcurrants there are...the ideal cross would be the sweetest, most disease/pest resistant , heavy fruiting and largest berries .

            I wonder how you can find out what the crosses are for the Casseille?
            For the Jostaberry its (Ribes x culverwellii, Ribes nidigrolaria, Ribes x nidigrolaria or Ribes nigrum x uva-crispa)

              I know this is an old thread....but I've been looking at the same thing
              According to D T Brown Casseille is a cross between 'blackcurrant Giant Boskoop and a gooseberry' so makes a sweeter fruit than a jostaberry.

              Does anybody have fruit this year, or is it still too early to taste them?

                Yup, been picking ours for a fortnight. Sweetish but a little tart - the darker ones are sweeter as you would expect.
