  • Ornamental or Mexico type Sweetcorn

    Hi all,

Not sure if this is the right place for this but can anyone recommend a supplier of the blue or multicoloured sweetcorn you occasionally see tied in bunches and dotted around as ornaments? I have come across one site (Jungleseeds) but they require a minimum order way above what I'm prepared to spend with them.

Thanks very much in advance for any recommendations

    You'll be lucky!
I managed to Google: Hopi Blue Ornamental Corn (aka. Hopi Blue Dent Corn)

This is a corn variety originally from the American Hopi Indians which dries to a royal blue color. This variety was originally maintained by the Talavaya Center and was identified as "Hopi Blue Corn" to differentiate it from some other blue corn varieties. The plants are very bushy and are 5 to 8 feet in height with 8 to 10 inch ears of smooth blue kernels.

It's from a seed swap site: Corn Seeds - Heirloom Sweet Corn Seeds - Sweet Corn Seeds

I got some Blue Hopi (indian blue corn) from Jungle seeds (I was buying a bunch of other stuff so the 10 minimum spend wasn't a problem) - would offer to share bt you only get about 25 seed per packet and I want them all!!

Have had a google to see if it is elsewhere but without luck - available from a few places in the US but if you're going to ship it from the US you might as well spend a tenner at Jungle seeds Or try ebay? I had a look and there isn't any on there atm but maybe another time...

You may of course have better luck if you know the names of some other varieties? I did some across "strawberry popcorn" which looks great - dont' know if it is edible but certainly very ornamnetal.

Strawberry Popcorn Seeds - Gorgeous!! on eBay, also Vegetables Fruits, Plants Seeds Bulbs, Garden Plants, Home Garden (end time 06-Sep-08 21:13:00 BST)

Sweetcorn Seed 'Strawberry Popcorn' (Zea mays 'Strawberry Popcorn')

I love goggling for other people's internet shopping, it's so much cheaper than doing it for myself
Warning: I have a dangerous tendency to act like I know what I'm talking about.

Thanks for your responses - it's not easy to find these things, but I will have a go using corn names and see where that gets me.

Unwins used to sell a blue corn, called Jade. I have also seen Bantam bicolour seed offered for sale in the UK.
