  • My Poor Allotment

I must confess my poor allotment has been negleted over the school holidays.
I have been over to pick my produce and do a bit of weeding but not much else. During term time i go there most days and I love it, but during the holidays its been difficult.
Yesterday I took OH's niece to have a look as she would like to put her name down for one in her area, The weeds have overtaken but we still managed to pick 6 overgrown courgettes, 2 cabbages, beetroot, runnerbeans, sweetcorn, broccoli and 4 strawberries.
My sunflowers are about 8ft tall possibly taller !!! one in flower the others will soon follow.
The school holidays have passed in a whirl back next Tuesday guess that means I will be back on my Lottie getting ready to plant my onions and broadbeans
Today daughters friend is arriving from Gloucester staying till saturday, they met 3yrs ago while we were camping and have remained friends even though they are now 10 and 12 yrs old, daughter stayed with them last year.
No Lottie time again this week, last week spent every day on the beach even in the rain under umberella's good job it was only heavy showers.

When my plot runs away with it's self. I get my kitchen timer, pretend I am doing a 'make over' I set the timer for say two hours... take a pic on mobile, then another at the two hour mark! kinda keeps me going when I think it's all too much.
    just a bit of fun.

Dont give up it's amazing what even one or two hours can do!

    Keep us posted jackie j

Aren't your kids interested in going to the lottie with you? I used to go with my dad when I was young and had a great time catching slow worms hiding under corrugated metal sheets. He probably would have liked me to do some weeding though.

I,m looking forward to the kids going back to school now too.
There is only so much time you can spend at the lottie with them and the weather has not been kind.
They helped me out last week though, picking all the caters off the brassicas and trying to get them to swim in a bucket of water tee hee hee!

Capsid she was when I fiirst got it but has wained now, she would rather meet up with her friends so I escape for a while but not long enough to do any real work. We have been busy doing other things and the weather has been a bit off putting as well. I am not giving up its just the summer holidays being so long I feel guilty if I leave her for long periods she is 12 yrs so it will get easier, by the time my OH comes home from work in the evenings I dont feel like going over. I usually go just after 9am and stay till 3ish most days during term time.

I got back from 3 week holiday minding parents place in lake district 2 weeks ago to find a miraculous growth of bindweed smothering the entire allotment. I had no choice but to crop what we could(which was a lot) then resort to round up over all but the fruit crop area. Went back yesterday and its all died, yeah!

Hi Jackie - know exactly how you feel. Due to the silver wedding preparations, including the complete revamp of the back garden, my lottie has been very, very neglected this summer - never mind, next week will make a plan and start catching up - hopefully! Speaking of which, I really should be doing some housework..................................LOL! Bernie

Second that, really good idea Headfry but how much time do you factor in for hubby 'chatting' to neighbours. If I get half an hour out of him over a two hour stint, I'm lucky!

Perhaps I should make it competitive; his bit versus mine over a couple of hours, I definately won't sulk if he beats me........

Headfry - despite a summer so wet that the veggies basically got 'washed out', the slugs had a ball and the garden is now all soggy, the weeds are all doing brilliantly - tallest ever.

That's an excellent point you made and you gave me a smile along with it.

My thoughts exactly headfry where do the weeds come from ? we would all have lots of lovely veg if they grew like the weeds !!!
My Oh thought he had come to the wrong house last night it was so tidy !!! apart from the dreaded ironing I have caught up with the housework for once it wont last !!!
The garden is a different story this winter I realy need to work on it, the front is only small, just big enough to put the trailer on it and have a tiny bit each side of the bay window for flowers.
The back is small, grassed with a border around, every thing needs a good cut back I might even pull some things up.

I break my lottie time into chucks too Headfry, I find that sprus me on the most and I get to do a bit of everything. Any spare time and I go back and finish any bits I didn't finish weeding etc...

We were away last week and the week before I couldn't get to the plot. We went down there for 3 hrs on Monday and I got a fair bit done but was due to go back tonight.
