  • Alternative (but NOT recommended) method for checking setting point when jam making!

I decided today that I wasn't going to get any more raspberries ripening - the last few have been so soggy due to the weather that they weren't worth the bother. I have been freezing the berries as I picked them and had a nice couple of pounds of fruit, so the plan was to make jelly as none of us like jam with seeds in.

Anyhoo - made said jelly and reached the setting point. Put it into jars and commenced putting on the covers - a tricky job when the jars are still hot. Younger son decided he would help put the laccy bands round while I held the plastic covers. I realised this was just too risky after two or three tries and said to son to leave it and I would stand the jars in the microwave overnight for them to cool down. I went and opened the door of the microwave to start the move - next thing I hear a splash and a yell and mk2 son jumps backwards as the contents of one jar spray round the kitchen!!!

Nice red raspberry jelly in a lovely spray pattern over worktop, cupboard fronts and floor - not to mention dog bowls, cooker, son, mum.....

Very messy cleaning up operation is about complete. Will need to remove two cupboard doors and the bottom plinth in the morning to finish it off. Now, where did I leave that glass of wine?

Oh no Shirley! What a sticky disaster Did the jar break too? Lucky not to end up with nasty burns...
I've got blackberry & raspberry mush dripping through the jelly bag now, with the last rasps & first blackberries. Yum! I'm not going to make it til tomorrow though, too late to start now.

Lordy Shirley..... glad its not just me who has days like that!

Thinks HF, I will make Mr HF an 'instant whip' Choc flavour....take him back to kiddy days

put milk and powder in bowl, thinks HF- I will use the Braun thingy to whip it up......

Oh yes, it did alright, one small pulse....up the walls, floor, cupboards in fact every thing in 1m radius covered in milk, powder and half mixed goo.
Cats just sat there looking like....
'well guess that was not supposed to happen like that then'!

Still trying to find the best way of clearing up a half liquid, half power and all else in between type mess!

          Get a dog?

Ludo came rushing into the kitchen at the sound of the splash and I had to quite forcefully send him to bed as I didn't want his paws or tongue getting burned!
