  • worried :(

my 18 year old son is off to tenerife with a load of his mates on friday, his first time abroad on his own ..... and as if that's not worrying enough ........ he said, we'll be fine we have bail insurance in other words if they get arrested they get out on bail ..... great just what i needed to hear, i'm not sure if i should be relieved to hear that they have it .... or worried silly that they think they might need it

I'm sure he'll be fine - it's only when you haven't got these things in place that things go wrong.

When I was 18 I buzzed off to the far East and spent two years working and then a couple of months travelling. Nearly drowned with all my mates in a rip current on Bali, the bus I was on Malaya was held up by armed gunmen, nearly caught smuggling gems out of Burma in my toothpaste tube (they were the size of pin heads, there was absolutely no point). Luckily we didn't have long enough in Thailand to get press cards forged so we could get a visa to go into Laos to see the war (that was our plan, I kid you not)

Jesus! I hope my kids are more sensible than I was. But I survived.

Sadly I did lose a friend, in my late teens, who looked the "wrong" way crossing the road in Belgium though. Tragic.

My Mum sent me condoms; and I second that advice. (She was pretty open-minded given that was over 30 years ago)

Get him a girlfriend to go with him ASAP- then at least you'll know where he is and what he'll be doing most of the time!

                            ....he'll be fine

...on the other hand.....you should take yourself to bed with a huge block of chocolate and wait for him to come home!

He's doing what the politicians do - talking up all the bad things so that when something does happen you say 'oh well, that wasn't as bad as I was expecting'!

He sounds great - really switched on. I know it's hard but don't worry too much about him! I hope he has a great time
