Any idea what this tree might be?

    Any idea what this tree might be?

    This is on a fellow lottie holder's plot, only he never seems to be around for me to ask. I've never seen flowers or fruit on it, so guess it's ornamental. It's about seven feet high.

    Would love to know what it is!

    I was feeling part of the scenery
    I walked right out of the machinery

      Its hard to tell.Looks like a walnut tree to meOh hang on is it a lilac?

        My guess is a broad leaved lime? Not the citrus variety.

        Does it have those little collection of small ball-like structures (see enlarged image for detail) - now or at any other time of year? Also - i did see a couple of images with what looked like sticky buds similar to horse chestnuts - also referred to.

          Could well be a Poplar we have one on our site they grow very tall and Pigeons sit in waiting for me to go home jacob marley

            Catalpa - Indian Bean Tree

            BBC - Gardening - Plants - Plant Finder - Catalpa bignonioides

            It will eventually have long bean-like pods on it!

                Cheers folks! Still can't decide if it's a broad leaved lime or a bean tree! I'll keep an eye on it for further developments!

                  I have to say I am more pursuaded by the Inadian Bean Tree rather than my suggestion.

                  The edges of the leaves seem smoother.

                    That would be my guess too - beautiful tree, but they can grow really big if they're not kept in check. I think the flowers/beans don't emerge until its well established.

                      It is definitely a Catalpa bignonioides 'aurea'.

                      There are a few where i work.
                      It will grow quickly into quite a big sod, very flexible branches, takes pruning ok, but grows back twice a vigorous, its a pain in Autumn when all those big leaves fall, they tend to smother everything underneath.

                          I'd say it was an Indian Bean. Said to be good for keeping insects away.

                            I think it looks like a Catalpa too. I'd never seen one until last year when we were walking through a small square in Manchester city centre & my husband looked up & said 'what's that tree with all the long pods hanging off it?' Tree's aren't my strong point but I guessed at Indian Bean (Catalpa) which is from the USA & then we noticed there were quite a few of them (very tall, enormous leaves) & that the square had statues & other things which related to the US, so we learnt something new about where we lived! Lovely tree but they'll probably have to pollard it if they don't want it to tower over everything Seahorse.

                              If anyone ever visits swindon town centre,indian bean trees seem to be some of the most used trees in the councils raised planters.....and yep,they are huge!!!!
