    Duck info desparately needed! (not chook info, I know.)

    Hi, it's me again and I need some info on ducks Because im getting 2 females.
    I would like them to be like pets, (eg, eat out of hand, pick uppable breed etc.) Im thinking about buff orpington ducks, Because i heared their freindly but does anybody have any other sugessions? i also need a bit more general info on pet ducks. altogether im a bit bisfuggled. I cant wait to get them, im going to call one grace but the other one.....?

    'Fraid I don't know much about ducks, except that they need fresh water to wash in and are a lot messier than chickens! Have you tried the Practical Poultry forum? There are loads of duck-owners there.

      Don't know anything about keeping ducks but:
      They are fabulous - we have a load at the end of our garden as it backs onto the canal
      They are nesting at the moment and mating like crazy [very noisy]. They keep flying onto our roof and I am singing 'ducks on the roof' quite often and making up my songs around this fact [sigh].
      I do know a band that were called the Buff Medway's - after the Friends of the Buff Medway's Fanciers Association - perhaps there is a Buff Orpington Fancier's Association??? Must be a Kentish thing [I spent most of my life in Kent - another sigh].

      Just a thought...enjoy your ducks

        Whohoo! Thanks peeps! How nice it is to see people engoying being in the presence of ducks. I have set up a strand for people to chat about ducks, both wild and pet. Just go to general chit chat and then duck disscussion area and feel free to brag about those wonderful quacking balls of fluff.

          Ducks of pretty much all breeds can be quite tame, we had campbells and runners and alysburys, all very tame, they are a lot messier than chooks but their eggs are very very tasty. you need enough water for them to put in their beaks and cover their eyes if thet makes sense to drink and bathe their eyes in, put it as far away from their food as possible, and then idealy they need 6inch deep water big enough for a swim.
          try and pave the edge of swimming water as it will get VERY messy very quickly.

              Thanks again for the info. Cheers to yoanbob. I really needed that info about breeds. As for Birdie wife..... that was a great pun to brigten up my afternoon! Oh, and Ive come up with a name for my 2nd duck......Nutmeg!
