  • Fag butts and fag ash

Instead of putting my fag butts and ash in the bin, would it do any harm putting them on the compost heap. Are there any warmful chemicals that would go into the soil after they have been composted or any useful ones

Do you smoke ready-mades, or roll your own? With or without filters? I ask because the filters don't seem to rot down at all. There are also lots of harmful chemicals in tobacco.

You should never mix tobacco products with anything that will come into contact with Potato, Tomato, Pepper, Chillis, amongst others, due to the risk of Tobacco Mosaic Virus. In fact, you should always wash your hands after smoking before handling any seeds/seedlings/plants due to the risk of this Virus.

Don't put your fag ends in the compost bin!

Does that mean we shouldn't smoke when we are gardening?

That would be a counsel of perfection yes. (Not in my garden anyway!)

My FIL always smoked his pipe in the greenhouse while the tomatoes were growing to combat aphids, never seemed to do his plants any harm. The old gardners you'st to swear by tobacco smoke to fumigate the greenhouse. There again if they got Tobacco Mosaic Virus, they'd probably think it was sun scorch and put some shading up.

One of the old ideas for making an insecticide was to steep ciggarette butts in water and use the concentrate to killl greenfly.

My own views are that nicotine is a deadly toxin and pests or humans shouldn't be subjected to it!

Sorry folks, I am an ex-smoker and my Dad died of lung cancer after smoking Old Holborn for most of his short life!

Having said all that, the burnt ash would probably be high in Pottasium!

Well thanks for that folks, you have made up my mind for me. Into the bin they will still go and not on my compost heap. For the small amount that i do get anyway, it wouldnt be worth it. Once again, many thanks for your info and concerns.

Cigarette ash and olive oil is a messy but very effective way of removing water marks from wooden tables etc.

Apparently it takes in excess of 25 years for a cigarette filter to breakdown/decompose. So my theory is to burn them !!

                            Hi folks,
I started my working career 50 years ago in a market garden and my boss was a heavy smoker but always wore gloves when he smoked as he said that nicotine on the plats was a definate killer
                            Regards,
                            George.

Hi Snadger, my good old Dad went the same way a couple of years ago and i am sure that we both know the curse what nicotine does. I was interested in the bit about Pottasium in ash. I worked for Government House in Gibraltar for 2 years, there the lady of the house asked us to save our fag ash. She would then put it onto the house plants.
