Whatever happened to a Bakers dozen?

I've just sown my F1 Hybrid Shirley tomatoes and some F1 hybrid Jalapeno's!

Each packet was quoted as having twelve seeds. Each packet HAD exactly 12 seeds!

I know F1's seed are expensive to produce but if I don't have 12 germinate I will be sending them an email or letter!

At approximately 30p a seed they should be gold plated!

I bought some seeds from a plage that pops up on the Google ads here. KCB Samen, small order, 4 packets, just 12 euros. Each packet said 12 seeds but one had 30 seeds in and the other 3 had 20 seeds in. And they sent me a free packet of pumpkin seeds as a thank you.

    Now that WAS a result.

I once brought a packet a swede seeds that claimed 150 seeds...there were 6 and a broken half! but if it said 12 seeds Snadger...I guess er....well, I think the baker's dozen went the same way as rural post offices, local businesses and the baker himself...under the big boot of the supermarkets. Never mind gold plated! each individual seed will soon be bar-coded and vac-packed.

What would a gardener want with a bakers dozen?

On a similar glowing note to Wilko, I opened a packet of their sweet peas to sow yesterday - the pack said 'average quantity 35', and there were 55 seeds - so some poor sod will be disappointed with their packet of 15!

You take them to the lottie and you get an extra doughnut or hot x bun to share with your chums.

I'd love a big bag of hcbs right now, we get some great Easter stuff here but not the buns.

              They're easy to make Tony!
I opened my pack of Heritage Seed Library Lancashire Lad pea seeds yesterday and found that instead of 10 I had 11. Is that a decimal baker's dozen?

I had the same with Wilkos sweetpeas, 2 types each had close to 50 seeds. The expensive ones I bought (can't remember the supplier) had just the number stated. I thought maybe the Wilko's wouldn't germinate so well but they were close to 100%

The cheap seeds (under £1) like Alan Romans, MoreVeg.net and Pennards are exactly as stated qty or even unspecified for the last one. Cheap seeds are not necessarily cheap, just adjusted qty. I think the bigger seed suppliers tend to be 3-5 seeds more.

Can't get much bigger than Thompson and Morgan, although I used a free £10 voucher to pay for them so can't grumble too much.............spose!
