Hi all
have just registered with this site. This is my first year growing veg. A bit late getting started as had to build ve garden from scratch. Moved to this house about 4 years ago and have spent time doing up the house( an ongoing project) Made redundandt last year and then off for six mnths due to an operation on my ankle so thi is the first year able to get stuck in. Raised beds made from a recycled fence. have planted up with lettuce, cauli, cabbage peas carrots spinnach beet potatoes onions spring onions cucumber and strawberries. Basically this year is a suck it and see, we planted up onions cabbage lettuce and cauli in seed trays and planted out about three weeks ago, should have been a bit earlier but delay in building beds due to weather and I do all the work myself as there is just me and my 13 year old daughter, who is keen to lant and harvest but not so keen on the hard graft!!
We were most disappointed the other day when after watching daily the progress of our first strawberry the birds got it. Have raisd th nets up a bit with the help of some canes. and made some improvised bird scarers woth canes with shredded white bin bags on the top seems to be doing the trick so far. My aunt has been growing veg for a few years but down in sunny somerset. Reckon growing in this part of scotland will come with its own problems.
Anyway I'm sure i'll be on here loads looking for advice and comparing notes

hi i am also new to this site. Have been growing fruit and veg for a few years now,but this year have introduced chickens in our back garden still a little new to looking after chickens.Veg and fruit are growing well but having to be careful when letting chickens out .Any one else out there with chickens?

Are you kidding tinah,have a look at "rule the roost" you will really get a lot of good information and loads of us are hooked on our chooks.Have fun ,youve chosen a very good site.We'll all be interested if you put some pictures on.

Welcome ailsasyl and tinah. Spoke to your daughter yesterday ailsasyl. Bright kid you've got there. Sounds like you've made a great start to this year's growing season. The trick's keeping it from the birds and the slugs and snails eh?

Updated September 29th - Bean drying.

tell me about it something is getting the strawberries. found a green one laying loose on the soil today the stems been nipped through about 5cms above the strawb checked over the plants and theres a few like this. My daughter was on here for a couple of hours yesterday and loving it, as we don't know any other growers apart from my aunt in somerset its great to have somewhere to compare notes and ask questions. Reckon I'm going to have to fight her to get to the computer first over the summer hols lol She finished on Friday.

I understand from Stacey we are a similar age with similarly aged daughters!

She's just be very helpful in advising me how to re-introduce daughter to gardening...boys have taken over her interest but Stacey suggests getting boyfriend involved

I have just a couple of raised beds growing, beans, peas, raspberries, tomatoes, onions and red cabbage. I also have couple of gooseberry bushes and some rhubarb. I'm also having a pumpkin competition with my mum who lives along the end of the road.

Have my name down for an allotment and would love to include daughter as we could then call in there on the way back from school occasionally

updated 28 Feb 08 - preparation for the growing season

Stacey not too interested in the boys yet!! She's had her pal over who is a terrible eater, she's gone vegetarian but hates veg!! Stacey trying to show her that veg is best fresh. There are no allotments round here but has to be said a local MP was talking about it in thelocal paper. Most gardens around me are grass or paved not many gardeners apart from one of Stacey's teachers at school we don't know anyone locally.
Stacey might be right about getting the boyfriend involved my aunt has a 17 year old son, she's constantly got his mates and their girlfriends in and they love eating from the garden whe she got her allotment several offered to help with the heavy digging!!!
