Default my allotment

Hi my name is Jackie and i live in Devon. Last Sept i got an allotment after waiting just over a year, at the time i wondered how i would fit it in to my busy life, as a mum to 5 kids (4 grown up sons and one 11 year old daughter and grandma of one ) i was also carer to my sister little did i know that my very brave sister would pass away at the beginning of Oct after battling cancer for 6 years.
The allotment became my way of dealing with the loss as we were very close. At the moment I'm struggling as i have a frozen shoulder but my husband helps and one of my sons is going to help dig it over. I have planted broad beans, onions and a mix of herbs all doing well and red onions and shallot's beginning to appear.
My potatoes are chitting and i have a selection of seeds at the ready, all we need now is the gales to pass and my family wont see me for dust!
I get my enthusiasm from my dad who was a keen gardener and although he died when i was six i can remember spending a lot of time with in the garden.
Well that's enough about me. Jackie

Hello and welcome! Make yourself comfy!

I think GYO is the most theraputic thing you can ever do - it's amazing how the time flies past when you're elbow deep in compost! You can let your brain wander (not too far haha) and just let all your stresses go :-)

Sorry to hear about your sister - I lost my mother in law in October too, so I know how you must be feeling.

Everyone's lovely on here and you always get sound advice, no matter how silly the question!

If you get a chance, pop a pin in the Grapes map on Google maps (there's a thread in general chitchat that'll show you how to do it!)

Hi Jackie,

We got our allotment last May, I broke my foot in July, and my OH had this appendix out a week later! We still managed to grow amazing courgettes, pumpkins, potatoes, carrots, parsnips, runner beans, broad beans, pak choi etc etc etc
I think the weather last year really saved us. If it had been dry and hot we would never have been able to water anything (I was on crutches until mid September!)
To add to things, we are also building our own house, and we've got our eye on another lottie!!

But there is something wonderful about allotments. Everytime I walk through the gate I heave a sigh of relief just for being there.

Welcome to the vine, and hope to catch up with you again

Hi JackieJ, welcome to the 'Vine
I got my allotment last Feb, just after my mum died with cancer I think it probably saved my sanity though, still does infact. I have a big back problem (amongst other things!), but there are so many jobs to do on the plot, that I just swap jobs if I get a twinge, so as not to strain anything. I'm sure you'll do fine.
Hope to see you around the boards, all silly questions welcome!

Hello Jackie,
My dad died many many years ago but I can still hear him tutting when something goes wrong on the plot because I have tried some new fangled idea picked up from the pages of some glossy magazine. If it goes to plan I feel him smiling almost as if he encouraged me to do it that way.

Hi Jackie j and welcome to the forum, more fun than reading gardening mags (apart from Grow Your Own of course). I'm not sure how the map thing works but here is the link if you've not found it yet:

Grapevine map?
