  • I am new to all this could do with some sound advice

    Hi everyone,

Let me begin with my name is Versatile I am an independent Hip Hop artist/activist that resides in the UK.

I have not come here to promote my music or any other projects. With that out the way I will start by saying I am starting to grow my own fruit and veg...but I am at the root, the real beginning...

I am doing this from my apartment in London and I went to B&Q and brought a mains heated propagator and three seeds Carrot, leaf salad, and radish...as those are the ones I could only see that I can sow now. The others start at the beginning of the year.

I know I will need to buy a multi-purpose compost which I will get soon. But my question is...is there any other fruit and veg seeds that I can sow from July and if so where other then B&Q can I buy these seeds?

    Regards,
    Versatile

are you growing in pots or in the ground? ok, scratch that, probably pots....
most salad leaves now, any lettuce, and later on in the year pak choi, mustard greens, oriental leaves, maybe get away with some beetroot, definitely kohl rabi [nods to zazen], garlic later on in the year [wait till at least sept for that, buy cloves form supplier not supermarket], spinach, chard, mostly leaf veg I'm afraid....
someone else will be along shortly...
    and welcome

      Hi Versatile,
Your heated prop is of no use until Jan/Feb, when you can start sowing toms & chillies. At this time of year, there's enough heat around in our British "summer" for seeds to grow without lecky
You've come in at the end of the sowing year pretty much, but there's still a few things you can start:
      What to do in July

          Thanks for all the replys

I am really grateful for the replies...I also after doing some depth real-search D. T. Brown's website came up quite a few times. My problem is I do not really like buying things such as this online. But I will have to drop the fear and do what is necessary.

          Thanks once again.

Hi Versatile - welcome to the Vine. Could you add your location to your profile please? You say you live in an apartment - will you be growing indoors, or do you have access to a balcony or garden?

What, buying seeds? DT Brown's are safe

Or, go to your local GC, Wilko, pound shop or wotnot

Hello Versatile and a very warm welcome to the Vine. I use MoreVeg mostly as it's a very quick and personal service and you can buy small quantities of seed. Don't be afraid to buy on line, I've always found it very safe.

                    real seeds are good too.
The main reason I buy over the net is because you don't get the range of varieites in a superstore type place, there's still more variety in a garden center than any b&q type thing, but the internet makes so much more available.

Have you had any problems with germination from Nicky's? May have been my fault but my seeds from there haven't done brilliantly this year.
Also as a fellow Londoner, curious to know what works welll for you this year.

The radish and leaf salad is sprouting up nicely I am unsure if that is the correct term but its been 6 days since I have sown them can anyone tell me what is the next step and what exactly is harvesting because it says on the packet from the seeds there is a certain months to harvest them

Harvesting is just picking to use. The leaf salad, just pick off individual leaves when they are big enough to eat. The radishes you pull when you can see the roots are an edible size. What containers do you have them in. Photos would be good.
