  • Hello

Hi everyone, I've just joined, so thought I'd introduce myself.
We've just bought a plot of land, and are really excited about getting some veg beds up and running . I'm going to need some advice about pruning the apple trees that are there too, but will try to take some photos before asking questions.

Excited is just the right thing. Do you need the work & expense of making raised beds? Or is your ground good enough to grow in?

The ground is really wet at the moment, I know that everywhere is really wet, but I mean seriously waterlogged, (like standing on a soaked sponge!!) and it was last winter when we first looked at it too, so I think raised beds may be the way forward. We do need to sort out drainage too, but I don't want to miss out on any of the growing season while we try to sort that out. Our soil is quite heavy too.

Positioning of the beds within our plot is a big question too. I know I'm very lucky to have a choice, but it's also a bit overwhelming!!

                      Hi everyone
What a friendly lot you are!
I've updated my location, I'm in South Devon. Our land is about 6 acres, has a tin barn, a greenhouse, a few apple trees, a well and a pond. It's sloping land, but not too steep. Fairly near the top of a hill, so I'm surprised the drainage is so bad!! The well (at the top of the land) is currently overflowing, and the stream is fed by the overflow, and in turn feeds the pond. It has all become quite overgrown, so the pond and stream need digging out, and we are thinking of putting in a couple of French drains (??) to help with the bogginess!! I have no photos at the mo, but will take some when I am next up there.

We were told by the seller that the soil is shellet...shillet...something like that! There's a slate quarry in the valley over from us, so it's quite slatey, but heavy too!! Has my complete lack of correct terminology showed me up as the total beginner that I am!?!!? Never had a garden before, so totally in at the deep end! Think I will be on here a lot!!
