  • Hello, Im new and confused :)

    Hello everyone

    I have just moved into a house with a couple of raised beds and various berry plants and a couple of fruit trees (I think). I have the best intention of growing all kinds of things but to be totally honest, I have absolutely no idea where to start.

    I am eagerly awaiting Vegetable Growing for Dummies that comes out in September, I just hope it is idiot proof enough.

    I could do with an almanac of some kind that has a day by day or week by week guide on what to plant and what jobs to do etc, can anyone suggest any good books for me please.

    Im sure I am going to learn a lot from this forum and cant wait for it to stop raining long enough so I can get out in the garden and get started!

    Sowing

    There are still quite a few things you can sow in August.

    * Spring Cabbage
    * Chinese cabbage
    * Kohlrabi
    * Lettuce (sow a hardy variety for winter use)
    * Spring Onions (White Lisbon winter hardy)
    * Radishes
    * Spinach
    * Turnips

      Hi Jill,
      Make a list of the veg that you and any family like to eat, obviously this late in the season there are some things that you cannot grow now or may be able to start growing in a few months time. I wouldn't get too stressed about it though as this will defeat the object, everyone even the most experienced has failures. For a rough guide on what to do now google on veg planner and you should get loads of hits.

        Get to your library and have a good browse through. Buy the books that suit your style best ... tbh, there are so many, and you will get 100 different book recommendations on here (there have been many threads already ... have a go with your search button)

            Hi and welcome to the vine. Grow what you like eating and what you fancy trying. The best way to learn is by keeping notes of what works and what doesn't. Have fun and don't take it too seriously at first.
