  • Kenwood Chef or KitchenAid?? That is the question

Inspired by Ollie's kitchen Equipment thread, I thought I'd ask your advice.

I've hankered after a Kenwood Chef for quite a while now, but I'm a bit confused about all the different models available.

I'd probably use it for cake making mostly (Garden Society Shows etc), and maybe use the blender attachment for soups etc.

Does anyone have any comments, good or bad, about the model they own? Are they really noisy? Do they jump around the work top?

Or does anyone have the KitchenAid? Is that any good?

Kenwood Chef! Get one off flea-bay, there's always someone selling a practically brand new one - "Unwanted wedding present, used twice" mine said, and it was absolutely spotless when I got it, with box and all attachments and paperwork in it!
You can get loads off extras for the Kenwood and although some are gimmicky, some of them are marvellous! The mincer/sausage maker is my favourite.

Oh, yeah - noise... Well it's not so bad up to the middle of the power, it's a bit noisy on full-speed. Same with moving around the bench, although that depends what you're doing with it - it's worse with a full load of bread dough f'r instance.

I've been looking at the Titanium (mid range price wise) or the Patissier (cheaper) or do I go mad and have the KM023 Kitchen Mega Pack (Loadsamoney (on Amazonia))?

Will I ever use all the bits'n'bobs?

Would you be better off with a Sous Chef, or at least a Commis Chef.

The Kenwood Major had always stood proudly on my side for years until the last one. The titanium or look alike stainless steel. I had so many problems with flaking of the coating that I had an upper and downer with them. They ducked and dived so much after I suggested they should send it back to the drawing board. Mechanically they are great but have so many design faults that I dumped it and bought a Kitchenaid. Entirely satisfied with it apart from the size. There is a larger one available but only in the US.
Anyway you are very wise to do your own homework and whatever your choice I hope you have many happy years together.

Andrew James Electric Food Stand Mixer

Has anyone heard of this mixer? It's on sale at Amazon and looks as if it might be a halfway house between the big Kenwood and the smaller machines which are very lightweight.

Any personal experience of this would be useful.

              Many thanks

Becki, I'd just go for a bog-standard Chef. You don't need all the fancy bits and bobs, it's the motor that's the genius of them, and the older ones with less electronic thingammys is less likely to go wrong and easier to repair. Although my friend's mum still has her 70s orange one going strong, never broken down, ever!

I'd be tempted to go with a vintage 'Chef too. I have two, one of the fab orange ones and another that must be even older. All thats ever gone wrong is a capacitor(?) blew in the orange one but it was literally pence to fix. Second hand ones often have a lot of attachments with them too.

In fact if I ever need another, I'd get an old one regardless of money
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

Hi PB - just want to put my 2p worth in - I went for a beautiful cream Kitchen Aid (I blame Nigella) and I love it. It only does whisking and dough mixing - but if it is going to stand on my rather restricted kitchen surface space, I want it to be goodlooking! It is not tinny or plasticy at all and does the job I need when I use it. That and a goblet blender and we are off!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

                              Wow, thanks guys.
Sarz, you are a true Kenwood Chef fan aren't you chuck - bless your heart for all those links, I'm going to wade through them all now!!
Jeanied and brengirl - thanks for the KitchenAid vote. That's my dilema, would all the bits and bobs be wasted on me, or would I regret going for something too simple in the long run....aarrgh!!
Wayne - I've banned my Sous Chef from the kitchen, he just gets in my way.
