  • Will I survive the summer holidays?

We broke up from school on Friday, so Monday was the first official day of the holidays, . I planned to get so much done, and top of the list was tying back my rampant blackberry canes. They are thornless, so should have been no problem. It would have been OK if I'd remembered I was standing in a square of angle iron which is part of my patio shelving system. I turned, went to move and OUCH, I caught my foot such a wallop, it immediately started to bruise and swell from the toes right up to the ankle. I limped indoors, put the frozen peas on it, and couldn't get any footware on for the rest of the day.
Today, it is painful and swollen, but I managed to go and see the Harry Potter film, minus slippers, and got into the kitchen to cook this afternoon. Cinnamon bread, bread rolls and blackberry pie from last years berries later, I had some pastry left over. DD loves jam tarts, so that took care of that. I got them out of the oven, and some had boiled out, so I decided to move them before they welded to the tin. Big mistake, boiling jam cascaded over 3 fingers on my left hand. I ran them under the tap, and then sat for about 30 minutes with them in water. I called OH on the intercom phone, and he made me a cuppa, and brought me a chair, but hasn't offered to make the curry I was planning on for dinner. With blisters on 2 out of the 3 fingers, one which has popped, I don't think I will bother tonight, we have bread to eat
Tomorrow he said I must stay in bed all day, but then I will probably suffocate

I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

I'd go with the OH's suggestion of staying in bed for a day if I were you....you do know he's only saying that to have total dibs on the cinnamon bread [or is that just my OH's trick???].

I hide my snacks in my bedroom, so when they are all hunting for mums chocolate or peanut m&m's, i smile quite contently.......

Thanks for the sympathy, I needed it! Sons 1 and 2 were on a 'raid' on World of Warcraft, so weren't amenable to cooking dinner (they can get something when they are ready, probably around 3am), DD and OH had homemade bread and tinned tomato soup, but I had to make my own salad .
DD has squirrled (sp?) away her share of the cinnamon bread to protect it from her brothers.
Leaving the fingers in the water for so long has definitely helped, I usually just run under the tap for a couple of minutes, but as these burns were worse I persevered. The burn pain is much less now, it's the blisters will be the real nuisance.
                Lets see what tomorrow brings

hope tomorrow brings you something better.

                      I recommend the water teatment!

Just a quick update, and a thumbs up for the first aid treatment. If any of you reading this do burn yourself, don't just run it under the tap for a few minutes, do take the time to immerse the burn for a good while. The blisters have 'gone back' and are hardly visible, and the pain has gone. If you had seen them Monday night and compared them this morning, you wouldn't believe they were the same fingers. It is hardly possible to see where the burns were. They still don't like warm water, so I suffered my shower, but farmed the washing up out.
No incidences yesterday, DD was nagging me all the time not to so stuff, but I managed homemade burgers and a BBQ, and planted the beetroot seeds I had put to soak. Today will be the hardest job, motivating the rest of them to get off their behinds and do something useful

Glad you're feeling better. I burnt my fingers and thumb on my Forman grill thing a couple of weeks ago and soaked them in cold water. Took ages, but it definitely does work. Middle daughter has started the holidays well. 4 children, and they're moving house this weekend!!

That's good your fingers are healing well, keep on delegating until you feel 100%. Or better still keep it up and they might get used to helping out more.

Mine get hidden in the freezer at the back....I love frozen chocolate and because it is frozen, the other 2 can't eat it fast enough before they get caught.

Oh, Barley Sugar, what a start, but pleased you're feeling better. When I was teaching my OH used to refer to the summer holidays as the Silly Season, as that's when all the schemes I'd planned over the previous months would come to fruition... or at least, would theoretically come to fruition. Anything major which needed to be done in home and garden would be tackled then. I'd make a great start then run out of steam, need parts I couldn't locate, get rained on, not get rained on so take the kids camping. There was always a huge mess of unfinished summer projects for him to sort out come September.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.
