  • What's the worse job you have to do?

    Just for fun:

    My contribution:

I've just done the annual clear out of the compost bin.

It gets emptied into dug-out trenches in the adjacent raised beds.

There are 3 parts to it.

    1. The stuff on top. Recent peelings, bits of brocolli etc. This years leaves. So far so good.

    2. The stuff that's been there a while. A stinking putrid sludge with the occasional mouldy puff ball of 'something'

    3. The stuff that's properly decomposed.

The 2nd part has a habit of spreading into the rest of it so I have a good 30-45 minutes of wretching and gagging. Joy.

The good news is that when I dig the trenches, there is absolutely no sign of the previous years addition bar the occasional 'Pink Lady' apple sticker so I know it has been fully broken down and helping the soil. The soil is now noticeably crumblier than it was originally so quite happy overall.

Actually I think is probably moving the enormous plastic sheeting I use to suppress the worst weeds over (part of) winter - its always a slug-fest and invariably I get covered in mud / slug innards and so forth. I should move it a couple of times but never do more than once.

In all honesty I think this might be its last year of use.

No compost should be stinky or putrid. It sounds like your ratio is not correct & needs more browns added.

Im not sure about the worst - but the most annoying has to be folding up the netting and enviromesh whilst it does it's best to cling onto every plant, cane, stake and raised bed in sight.

When i get my netting out my cat thinks its a game & hides under it waiting to pounce out, thinking i cant see him & i try & take it away & he thinks thats a game too & stamps his paws on it so it cant get away & he sits under it for ages untill i go away. My worst thing is when I'm planting something with my bare hands & haven't noticed my cats messed right in my spot & I get 'it' all in my nails & I think where's that smell coming from & it's my hand

Worse job in the winter is pruning the tayberries. The variety I have is very thorny and I always get it caught up on my woolly beanie hat, in my hair, on my coat or jumper and the thorns often go through my gloves into my fingers. It makes me swear, it is such a spiteful plant! But it tastes nice

I think my worst is digging out buried carpet. I've found 4 different ones today!

Not do-ing but seeing the empty beds that were so full of life not that long ago.

One job I'm not looking forward to is sorting out my raspberries - overcrowded, full of weeds (big ones, including bindweed nettles & lemonbalm ). All going to have to be dug up, weeds removed from bed & roots, best ones selected & replanted.

                            Going to take ages

Also dislike pricking out as takes ages as well. You may have spotted a theme here....
