  • Well that's the Shed put up!

    No guts, no glory?

Hey, I never said it would be easy, but it was sure a lot of fun!

Finally got The Shed up on Plot 1!

I had to pick a day where the wind was low and of course it’s always nice to work outside under warm sunny Blue skies.

Today was pretty much ideal, so after a few false starts, I eventually manhandled the shed onto the base and the JCB drill (Both batteries fully charged this time and also made sure I took my Wood drill bit!) made short work of putting the Back, Front, Sides and Roof on.

The most problematic part of the build was oddly enough putting the rubber roof cover on and the trim to secure it into place. Getting the rubber material onto a wooden roof suuuuuuuuucked, but I managed it eventually.

Hanging the door took a bit of work, but a piece of wood or Two underneath it got it situated just right for the JCB drill to do it’s thing and “job is a good one!” Door in place and lockable.

I finished for the day knowing the job was not perfect, some of the cosmetic trim pieces did not get put on as I just wanted to get the Shed built, mainly because it was so difficult getting the rubber cover in place perfectly but also because I wasn’t that fussed about it being showroom quality. Lastly I was getting hungry by this point and if I didn’t eat soon I was going to fall over, it was a late night working till 5 am on the website and I was woken up at 10 am by a potential client opportunity.

Next thing will be to get my hands on some guttering and perhaps a couple of Water Butts, so I can collect rainwater from the roof, which would be very handy and eco friendly.

I’m very happy the Shed is built at long last. It has been annoying me it wasn’t up, I left Plot 1 feeling very accomplished and proud of myself for getting it done and done alone.

Seeing the picture posted here makes me realise it's a bloody good job I wanted the roof sloping down and to the Right as you view the shed. Mainly as it's where I wanted the Water Butts to go, or else the shed would be badly on the skewiff...

Planned, or just cosmic karmic genius, you decide!

Looking good! What made you decide to locate it where it is? If I was allowed a shed I would have tucked it into a corner.

Now it's only a guess but my money is on that the shade beside the shed is almost constantly there during thee warm times so the shed offers perfect protection for the beers...

Alternatively underneath is the last bit of bindweed that was being a mare to remove.

Or maybe, just maybe it's neither and it's best for bonsai to reply...

        Good job by the way...

          Thanks.

Most of the sheds are located at the top end of the plots, I was going to place mine down the bottom but on thinking about it I thought there must be a good reason they were all further up. Potential for theft being the main reason I came up with and it was echoed by a few lottie owners I spoke with. Placing mine now in the middle and standing out like a sore thumb has more than likely made it the number One target, then again it's the newest arrival on the plots so any dodgy soul is going to take a look at it first right?

I wanted mine at the bottom because I am lazy and walking up to the top of the plot on arrival felt like a waste of time and more effort than I could cope with on a regular basis. Or to be a little geeky I like Time and Motion. Then having spent many sleepless nights considering this, I deduced that eventually the whole plot will be in play and workable, so sooner or later I'll be spending as much time up the top of the lottie as down the bottom, so then I have the issue of walking just as far all the time down the plot as I would walking all the way up to get to the Shed...

In a corner would be wise I guess, but the wind comes generally from the Front Left of the shed and the midday/late afternoon sun also comes at the front to the Left of the shed, so I thought having the Water Butt at the Right shaded side might be wise, so leaving enough room for a Butt on the Right was prudent?

I opted for mid plot to give me a bit of the best of all worlds. & I like to be a little different, but I like the beer idea! Not saying it is perfectly set up to be equidistant top to bottom of plot, but close as damn it considering it's not even set on a level base! (LOL)

So middle ish of the plot length and width seemed like the best idea, give or take a few inches and of course the now glaringly obvious slant, all of which I can live with, it's just a Shed, right?

Worked out well enough if all my best laid plans actually work out and the wind and sun do what they usually do and the water runs off where I want it to do. *fingers crossed*

I'll sleep well enough tonight not having to ponder the perfect placement of the Shed anymore to save effort + wear and tear, I just now have to figure out a way of adding a backdoor to it so I don't waste more time coming down from the top of the lottie and having to walk the extra 8 steps to go around the front of the Shed.

ARGHHHHHHHH I just screwed myself out of a decent nights sleep damn it! NooooooooooOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, the afterthought that kept me sane, mid plot and roughly central meant if I get my Beehive/ss, it's going behind the Shed, so the Bees have to come in out of the way of other Plots to a degree, it's out of the direct sun and sheltered somewhat. Only spent a few nights thinking this over without any real science being applied though, so it's probably utterly stupid.

Seems to me you need two shed, one at each end! It looks a good job but have you secured it to the ground well? I also like an air gap under a shed to allow the wind to dry it out. We used to erect 100 sheds a year on our poultry farm because we kept moving them around. Each one was built on brick piers to keep them off the ground, and built level, a leaning shed will eventualy lean even more as it puts pressure on all the nails and eventualy falls over. You could get the fall on the gutters by positioning the gutter brackets correctly.
Now you can begin to consider lean to's or a patio area for high tea's.

Well done, an excellent days work, and a vital ingredient to the plot!

having just erected on myself, I feel your pain with the roof issue.

No doubt a Second shed will materialise at some point, then a Third... You know how it is with Sheds, you wait ages to get one then all of a sudden 3 turn up...

The shed is laid on a paving slab base which was concreted together, once the shed base was laid on the slabs the four corners were drilled through and fixing bolts were placed through the frame and the slabs then screwed down good and tight and the raw plugs felt like they had a firm solid grip.

Thanks for the heads up on the leaning issue and impending disaster though! I didn't realise that. WIll avoid that when shed number 2 arrives and I put one at either end. Good enough excuse as any to get a Second shed.

I have been looking on Amazon for a single camping type burner so I can make Coffee while on the lottie, seen one I like that is pretty cheap along with a small camping kettle to go with it. One does not do Tea.

Another day, more fun with the drill, Decking screws and a few pallets...

Urgently needed some staging on the lottie to get the seed trays with sprouting seedlings onto. Firstly as the balcony at home doesn't get much full sun and I don't want them getting leggy and weak, Secondly I have another order of seeds about to arrive so need to clear the area for sowing the new batch.
