  • **URGENT** MS Word Emergency Help needed!

A friend has just lost her half written essay, is it possible to retrieve it?!!

She says: "I have no idea where it's gone to, the PC just made that plinky noise and it disappeared and now I've reopened it and it's gone"

She's looked in temp files and the only version in there is from last night.

    Has she looked in trash?

Does a search for a document with a known word from the document?

It's gone unless she had auto back up switched on but read here

        Thanks Mark. Doesn't look hopeful.

If word is closed and reopened does it open a recovery option?

If it's definitely gone from the document, she may have overwritten the document via some auto-save or similar

Sheet :/ If it is gone, at least she has a copy from last night to work from again if that's possible.

It's happened to me before, ever since then I've been quite an*l about backing up work that's important.

Aye, mine is on auto-save, and backs up to Dropbox as well. She's gone from 1200 words down to 300, so it's a big loss. Hope her tutor is kind...

Has she yet to turn the computer off?
If not, don't automatically turn the PC off, turn it off from the mains, then back on again. It'll prompt word to re-load all automatically non-saved documents. That is, unless, she's already exited word without saving her document. If she's done that, well.. the above still might work, but I've never tried it in that situation.

I am with GC on this I use MS Word and if you get a power failure when you fire up again Word reboots and brings back the document you were last working on.

Other wise I think she may well be in the poop.

She's already started re-writing it, after first installing Dropbox, and enabling auto-save... You only do it once I reckon!
