Default Urban farming article in the Guardian

Here's a link to a great article in the Guardian:

'Urban farmers' on Teesside plant the seeds of a food revolution | Environment | The Guardian

Particularly interesting is this quote about rising oil prices having a knock on effect:

Quote:
Tim Lang, professor of food policy at City University, says the era of cheap food in the UK is over, and that the nation is "sleepwalking into a crisis".
Growing your own is going to be a much bigger issue in the future...

Yes, they had a piece on (the growing popularity of) allotments last Saturday. Apparently some councils have waiting lists of more than 1000 people :O
shouldn't they be providing more sites then? or are they hoping the fad will blow over?

It'll be more than "a fad" if food prices rise as some think they're going to.

I went to see some allotments today (and two days ago). They're feeling the pressure. We have huge waiting lists around here so am both excited but prepared for disappointment at the same time. Am holding my breath! I may be lucky.

Those of us who already have allotments should consider ourselves very lucky indeed. I know we moan about other allotmenteers, the site committee, the council, etc - I'm the first to admit that I'm one of the worst offenders when it comes to having a good whinge - but really I'm incredibly grateful that I'm not on the hunt for a plot now, it must be so disheartening, and so frustrating. Yes, I think we need more allotment sites, but I can't see it happening when every tiny piece of land is being used for building. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, Fran. Let us know how you get on.
