TV detector vans are the bogie-monster for naughty students...

      they don't really exist!

The TV licensing board has a list of all the homes without a license and just knocks on their door and tricks them into admitting that they have a T.V....

A man once came to (ahem!) a 'friend's' house with a clip-board and funny gadget and immediately said, "T.V.?"

My wiley friend said "NO!" (knowing admission of ownership was the surreptitious intent)

He said, "are you Mr. ......"

      "NO!"

      "Is this No.51 ........ St."

      "NO!"

      "O.K., Bye" (bemused)

Turns out 'his' flatmate had called the T.V. rental place coz the T.V. was bugg*rd and needed fixing!

Still better to be safe than sorry!

Looks like the man from the local council.

Expect your council tax to go up next year. It's the double glazing and swimming pool that's done it for you.

I know everyone hates the tv licensing people, but stab vests? I'm thinking more smack round the head with a rolled up newspaper...

Unit on roof looks like ventilation unit - not sure. Following on from the comment about greenhouses - you don't need them - we've had several raids on houses in East Anglia that have been turned into cannabis factories and they set up growhouses with artificial lights inside the house. Maybe the "gentleman" was collecting the latest crop?

I know it doesn't have to be in a greenhouse, that was just a subtle way of suggesting the neighbour's growing habits might be illegal<g>

I'm of the opinion, along with BayViewPlot, that detector vans don't exist. We managed many years without a T.V. and only have one now because Number 2 son returned from uni with one, it's in his room though and we still don't watch it - though we have bought a license. Anyway, the point is for years I battled with T.V. licensing because no matter what I did they refused to believe that we could possibly live without the death-ray in the corner. 'We have vans now', said one chap, 'which are so sensitive they can tell how many sets you have, which rooms they're located in, what channel you're watching and even if they're turned off!'.
'Good', I said. 'Please send one round as soon as possible then perhaps someone will finally believe me'. Needless to say we never saw one. It didn't stop them making periodic visits though.
In the end I phoned them (there is no; "press 3 if you don't have a T.V., don't want a T.V. and therefore wish to tell us to stop bothering you" message, only payment method options). I did eventually manage to speak to someone slightly higher up the food-chain and had the usual circular conversation, where he insisted the onus was on me to prove I didn't have a set, and I wondered aloud why the law regarding T.V. licensing was different to any other law of the land, in that I had to prove my innocence rather than the powers that be prove my guilt. The assumption that you have a set being an assumption of guilt.
In the end I just snapped; 'Look!' I yelled, 'I don't want to redecorate my house, I do not wish to sell any antiques and I can't stand football, so WHY ON EARTH would I need a telly?' He conceded the point and I didn't hear from them again. It would have been a small triumph, but it took four and a half years.
