  • Trickier - I need cheap ouzo!

Hic! I've just been reading last years 'spirits' recipes - we made Pacharan, a Spanish sloe liqueur. It's made with a sweet anise spirit, but all we had was (leftover holiday) ouzo & added sugar. We'd like to make some again this year but ouzo is sooo expensive, does anyone know of a cheap source? Maybe Lidl?

I've definitely seen cheapish ouzo in Lidl but I have a feeling it may have been one of their 'specials', not a regular item.

If no-one else has a definitive answer, I will have a look next time I'm there.
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

Do you have any local Eastern Europian shops? They may be worth a try?I've found some of the stuff they sell to be at a fraction of supermarket prices, that said never checked out their spirits.

Lol! Devizes is our nearest town, not many incomers there I think? Our biggest, nearest Tesco (who delivers via online) is 20 miles away! They have a Polish section, but it doesn't seem to extend to Polish spirits, unfortunatately.

I found this on ebay, has anyone tried it in vodka?

That looks interesting SBP. Metaxa's supposed to be the best isn't it? Worth a try at that price, might even have a go myself!
I tried making fennel wine once but couldn't get it to clear and couldn't get the strength of taste I wanted!

Lol! thanks for the offer Janie! But you might need the booze on yer cruise?

Unfortunately when the OH went blackberrying today and looked to see how the sloes were doing....well like Flum found, there are almost none. (Over 5kg of blackberries though! )

Same here SBP, no bullace either So we're doing lots of 'Forest Fruits Vodka', which is mainly blackberries, with a few frozen redcurrants, blackcurrants & raspberries thrown in. It's delish
If you really want sloes, you can buy dried ones from some home-brew shops, but it kind of defeats the object

Not at all. Best brandy's better drunk straight, wouldn't insult it by putting it in a cocktail.
