  • At a total loss, can you help?

    Hello all,

I have got no idea whatsoever what to get my Mum for Christmas. I can't believe it. Apart from the usual dressing gown, smellies, slippers, jewellery etc. She lives alone and is in her early 70's, an active lady (enjoys gardening during the warmer months) and doesn't have any other hobbies as such. Any ideas?

We have the same sort of problems with my mum-in-law, she's in her 80s & doesn't really have any hobbies apart from going out with various church & social groups & occasionally pottering round the garden. Has your mum got a digital radio/CD player, a lot of older people like to spend time listening to the radio during the day? Or how about a nice posh quilted gilet she could wear in the garden or a fancy bird feeding station with bird bath/tray planter/feeders etc. We've got mum-in-law one of those with squirrel proof feeders & fat balls/seed/nuts etc. because she likes to watch the birds from her back room.

One of those soft comfy kneeling pads?
      Plant supports?
      Ornamental Hanging Basket bracket?
      Weather Vane?
      Seeds?
      Gloves?
      Planters/Pots/Urns?
      Watering Can?
      Bay Tree?
      Apple Tree?
      Subscription to GYO?
      Subscription to another magazine?

      Bottle of Sherry...

Dunno, not knowing her I couldn't say. I didn't know what to get my folks last year (we don't do presents now - it's easier!) so we got them a membership pack for English Heritage, as they like to tour with their Caravan. They looked very excited when they opened it, but I don't know if they've visited anywhere yet. RHS and National Trust and many others do gift memberships too.

Actually, a pair of guinea pigs would be better company than a rabbit.

            Is your mum on t'internet?
A broadband package would be ideal for my Ma-in-Law, to keep in touch with her grandchildren around the world, but her hubby won't allow nothing modern like that.

My in laws are the worst to buy for cos they think of something then go and buy it for themselves. This year mil has asked for a pair of navy woolen gloves, none to be found in this neck of the woods, any ideas. One last shop to try tomorrow.
                  Gardening ..... begins with daybreak
                  and ends with backache

I'm getting my mum a car stereo, and all the adults including her are getting eco balls for the washing machine and those plugs that you can turn off with a remote.

i always just ask her...no surprises but at least it's what she wants. In the past shes had printers, cameras, and various other electronic gadgets.

Got the same problem with my MIL. I would like for us to get her something, but no idea. He's useless, says he hasn't thought of it at all.
I know if we asked her, she would probably say not to worry about getting her anything, but thats not an option
Going to call in reinforcements and ask my SIL's if they have any ideas.

Well, you lot are a mine of information. Also having trouble with MIL's present, but some fabulous ideas, thanks!

I did think about writing an 'I owe you Three Days Labour' or similar, as my MIL does a lot for Brockham Good Companions (looking after sick and elderly) and also fundraising for St Catherine's Hospice. The idea is that I would either take days holiday or help her at weekend fundraisers.

Would she like a voucher to get her hair done? Or if she is feeling brave a manicure or pedicure? Everyone likes to feel nice!
