  • took an electric kettle for a walk today

Our electric kettle welded it's self to the socket and melted the plug last night.
So I thought I would do the right thing recycle it and not put it in the bin .

With kettle in hand I set off walking to pick the kids up from school with a little diversion via the
    household recycling center

When I got to the very small recycling center I was refused access onto the site on health and safety grounds ,they would not take it from me and place it in the small appliance skip.

As the jobs worth walked away I noticed the writing on the back of his Hi vis coat HERE TO HELP

I did think about throwing it over the fence into the skip but it could have landed on this head !!!

The site has a strict no pedestrian access so you can only recycle if you have a car then
and when I got to the school gates I got the question why are you carrying an electric kettle ??

It's now in the neighbours scrap metal bin

My neighbour was at the local scrap metal place the other day and someone brought in an electric kettle for the metal value - I don't think it was worth his petrol money to be honest!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

That's shocking, he could have taken it from you and put it in the appropriate bin. This world is going crazy with it's rules and regs.

I agree with Ananke, at the landfill site where I work he'd have had his a*$e kicked for being a lazy b&^*er.
In any case, anyone with a grain of common sense knows that rules are for the blind obedience of fools, and the guidance of the wise; if there was no actual as opposed to theoretical risk in you walking in, he could have let you break that rule.
If ever you are confronted by a jobsworth at a landfill site, just cast your eyes around. Sometimes there will be a nice little pile of salvaged tools etc for sale at the workmen's bothy (very unofficially of course), in just about any case I'd imagine they will have a little stash of scrap brass or copper that is a nice little earner for them - but of course, a sacking offence. Mention this, and you might find they come over all co-operative, and suddenly believe in give and take...

Great tip out of an unbelievable story. Having to attend in a car! Ludicrous!

It should have said Jobsworth on the back of his coat, plonker.

The people at my tip are so bone idle. Infact, they're letches. They *only* help good looking young women. I always end up helping some elderly person empty their boot whilst they sit there, feet up, drinking tea and watchin the telly.

                Is this like;

why did the electric kettle cross the road?
                - Because it was rejected from the recycling Plant?

                I'll get my coat!

They're pretty good at my local recycling dump. You can drive right up to the skips. They offer help with carrying big stuff and they looked away once when I asked them if I could have a big picture frame which I could see in a skip and was just reachable. They said, you'll not allowed to take anything from a skip but if we don't see you...... Trouble was, it was actually a mirror with a big crack across the glass but I didn't have the nerve to throw it back again. Its still in my garage!!

I've often parked at the bottom of the road and carried bags of stuff to the recycling centre near us to save queuing, thankfully they don't seem to mind here.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

                      We have these now.
Brilliant idea, though strictly I don't live I Lambeth, but we are near the boundary...

Also a good word for Lewisham who now collect pretty much everything from the kerbside box, all the usual suspects plus Tetra Paks, yogurt pots, all bottles and lids, CDs, aerosols, take-away trays...the list goes on. Love Lewisham, as they say

I should take it futher and inform "Those in Authority". Possibly the workforce need a kick up the backside and this isn't going to happen if they do not know. Cheers, Tony.

at our local tip you have to go by car too which has always puzzled me. its not within walking distance for me but if someone os going the tip to help the environment surely they can walk there if they want to?

h&s is used as an excuse for any stupid decision.all the staff at the tip walk around the site so why cant someone walk in with stuff.

lets be honest if they have walked there they wont be carrying much!
