Default Tonsilitis

I just want to moan really, I've got Tonsilitis for the 3rd time since March!

Feeling really poorly and sorry for myself!!!

The only good thing is that my Doctor took one look and has referred me to an ENT Specialist so after all these years of suffering I might finally get them taken out!!!!!!

Though with waiting lists etc I'll probably have several more flare ups before I'm seen.

You have my sympathies - I used to get it all the time and they finally took them out. This was about 4ish years ago. I have to say though that it was the most horrible thing ever and if I had had a sharp enough knife I would have cut my own head off afterwards and for about a week. Pain was awful. I even had to sleep sitting up.

But I did find out then I was pregnant and everyone started panicking as I had just had a general anaesthetic and was not allowed to take the strong painkillers anymore... they let me have 'smarties' ie paracetamol!

But no trouble since so it was worth it - I do have a friend who swears hers have grown back and she now gets tonsilitis again

Hope they sort it for you soon,

janeyo

oh peanut, my sympathies also i used to get tonsilitis alot...they've never taken them out, I am led to believe that tonsils don't get taken out anymore. Anyway, not had it for years...had pharyngitis also (sp?) and was given homeopathic tablets to help. Not sure if they did, but have not had any major symptoms since! Can you not ask your GP for an emergency referral?

Prob not much help, but hope things calm down soon!

yuk, hope you get it sorted soon.

Tell me - why do we have bits that they can take out when necessary and we still function perfectly well? Tonsils, gall bladder, appendix??

And wisdom toofs - wos that all about?? Oh hang on, I have no wisdom toofs so I guess that says a lot

Poor you with tonsillitis. I got it about four times with a week break in between some years back. In the end my dentist gave me a huge dose of antibiotics (I got an abscess cos I was so run down) and that stopped the tonsillitis dead too and I haven't had another dose since. I wonder if the doctors are too wary of prescribing a strong enough dose of antibiotics to actually blitz the blooming infection.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Poor Peanut, I am sorry!
I guess I am lucky - no problems here.
Nicos- It was a major fear for me, when I was a nipper, the thought just terrified me..what if, what if , what if, mummy what if I have to go into.....!
It seemed to all the rage back in 60's every other kiddy wink was in hospital....shudder at the thought even now!

Chop some lemon into a mug, add a big teaspoon of honey and top up with boiling water, sip when cool enough. It will soothe it a little.

Are you on antibiotics??
If not- I'd take yourself to A&E and get yourself seen.
Not wanting to scare you- but there are a few complications which should be avoided.

Doing the Honey and Lemon, but not much as swallowing is horirfic. Going to get wine gums, that sounds good.

Yes been on Penicillin since yesterday 2 x4 times a day, but swallowing them is soooo hard.

Being a professional Tonsilitis person I can tell as soon as I get a mild ache at the back of my throat that it's on its way so always get to the GP at the earliest poss time.

It still gets worse before the Antibiotics kick in, usually a good 72 hrs before I start to feel a bit better.

Thanks again for putting up with my whinges!!!

"In the past tonsils were taken out using what's called a guillotine and there was probably a greater risk of leaving small bits of the tonsil behind and sometimes if you continue to get sore throats then that little bit of tonsil continues to get tonsillitis and can regrow." (Chris Milford, Radio 4)

"It is possible for tonsils to partially grow back. In a procedure called a tonsillectomy, most of the tonsils are removed. However, if some tissue remains, tonsils can sometimes regenerate — although they probably won't grow back completely or to their original size." (University Hospitals)

Try gargling with soluble asprin ( unless you suffer from asthma, in which case ignore what i am writing immediately), dissolve 2/3 in a small amount of tepid water, gargle for as much as you can stand then slowly swallow, asprin is an anti-inflammatory as well as a pain killer, so should help reduce swelling as well as pain, and because they are dissolvable they enter the blood stream faster so the results are quicker.

Hi everybody,

Thought I was dying last night!!!! Never felt so ill and in such pain, think I finally got to sleep about 3am my throat was so swollen i thought I was going to suffocate in my sleep!! oh and the pain is just stupid!!! and my temperature went up to just over 38Poorly bunny indeed!

I've got my ice cream and Wine gums now so hope that by tonight i should be a bit better.

I've even taken photo's of my tonsils to take with me when I see the ENT Specialist!

Worst of all is the weather here is glorious but I just haven't got the strength to get into the garden and so much needs doing.

You have my sympathies, I suffered with frequent bouts of this in my teens and early twenties, I was constantly on antibiotics. Then I woke up one Saturday morning and was so ill and in such pain, the worst it had ever been by quite a margin. My mum was not the sort to contact a doctor out of hours unless there was an apparent danger of imminent death, so I was left to struggle on for the whole weekend. Nearly 30 years later I can still vividly remember that awful weekend. On the Monday I felt a little better, but not well enough to sit for two hours in the doctor's surgery, so I just kept going as I had for the previous 48 hours (nothing but sucking Tunes) Eventually it cleared on its own and I've never had it since. I've often wondered if this was because, in letting it run its course, my immune system had been given the chance to recognise and deal with it. Having said that, when my eldest daughter began to suffer in a similar way I would certainly not have advocated that she went without medical attention and she eventually had her tonsils removed.

I hope you are feeling much better soon. Love Bluemoon.
