  • tomatoes..did you know....

    In the 1500's wealthy people had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.

              And did you know it's a native plant of S America and was brought over to Europe sometime during the late 15th C and early 16th C

              ....and that "The word tomato comes from a word in the Nahuatl language (Aztecs), tomatl."

                Non-threatening allergic reactions to tomatoes include insomnia or sleeping troubles, moodiness, fatigue, heartburn, constipation, symptoms that mimic arthritis, canker sores, nocturnal incontinence or bed wetting, swelling of face and lips, rhintis, migraines and wheezing.

                    Nope- loads to do- but decided to get stuck into family tree research again today...just need a bit of a distraction from time to time!!!

                              mmm...but there's some confusion as to what the word actually refers to, as tomatoes were referred to as xitomatl, and tomatillos at miltomatl, but europeans shortened both names to tomatl.

                              or so I read earlier in the week when I was looking for recipes.
