  • A thought about getting the most out of the Vine

We have a fantastic site here - it's a real information resource for gardeners who grow edibles (and other plants).

So many knowledgeable people who have pooled there experiences and freely (and often repeatedly) give brilliant advice! Time and again I have been helped if I've asked a question, or I have picked up great tips to help with my gardening.

The Vine would not be the place it is without the contributors - and a sensitive mod team - and also the other side of the forum, the social aspect, which although lots of people don't choose to involve themselves with, is important to others and helps oil the wheels of the Grapevine (just to mix a metaphor).

You're always going to get good advice here - whether you pick it up from someone else's thread, or start your own - but you aren't going to get the best out of the Vine unless you contribute just the tiniest little bit.

Whether it's just a 'Hi' in the intro thread, or saying 'Hi' to someone else, to having the courtesy for a simple 'thank you' when you've asked a question and someone has taken the trouble to help out.

A simple thing, perhaps but those who've helped do like to feel valued - and like all things in life, a little give and take makes for a nicer world.

There's your 'thought for the day'.

Spot on Hazel (& thanks from us lot for the kind thought)

A little courtesy goes a long way on here, same as it does in the "real" world

What a lovely statement Hazel, I agree totally.

It took me a little while to feel confident about contributing and asking questions, but the support, help and advice I've been given has been wonderful.

Thank you to Mods and all Grapes.

They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks but this old dog has learnt a tremendous amount in just 12 months. There are just so many nice people on here too including a brilliant set of moderators who have always been completely fair and helpful.

I to concur with what's been said, plus a virtual friends and family place, some of us have met up and enjoyed putting a face to a name,we could do with another weekend meet up,only this time on a camp site of our choice, that way there is no pressure on anyone, only to have coloured flag on the outfit.

                Good shout Hazel

Apart from the sound advice given its a great sanity check too. All good forums in my opinion need that balance of advice and humour plus we have our resident mad inventer.....I think many forums are envious of what we have on here.

To re - enforce Dottie's point....most of us are total strangers but virtual friends.

I know more today than yesterday, but not as much as tomorrow

I don't understand that thread at all, no idea how it works - tomatoes, spuds and carrots are much easier

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Brilliant Hazel!. I had joined a different forum before I came to the vine, but it was so cliquey, I did get some good advice on occasion but usually my questions were ignored, after months of belonging and posting I did manage to get sort of involved but only through a medical thread! It took a lot of nerve for me to join this one as I suppose I expected the same, but how different. I have felt welcome from my very first post here, and think of you all as friends. A huge thank you to everyone who makes this forum the best there is (and i don't even have a lottie)
