  • T.V. programme ideas: make your pitch here!

Have you ever had any good ideas for TV programmes - either a story idea for an existing programme, or an idea for a new programme? Here are some of mine.

A 'Dr Who' story in which the Doctor arrives in an alternative 2009 on Earth, in which neither he nor the other time lords exist or ever have existed - but there is, on T.V., a popular, long-running TV sci-fi series called 'Dr Who', featuring a fictionalised version of him: in other words, this alternative present is our present! The Doctor has to find out how this world came to find out about the Time-Lords' real existance in the alternative reality he comes from, and incorporated it into a TV series.
This idea addresses a paradox which unavoidably affects all long-running T.V. dramas and soaps: that the characters have never heard of the drama or soap in question. In a real East-End pub, for example, a popular, perennial topic of conversation is probably what's happening in 'East-Enders', but obviously it isn't in the Queen Vic, and none of the characters are ever shown watching Stenders on telly either. The same, of course, applies to Corrie, Neighbours (aka Cobber Nation Street), Emmerdale, and the rest.

Talking of soaps, another idea I think could be fun would be for two soaps to have a joint storyline: for example, a character from Corrie goes dahn sahf, temporarily or permanently, and appears as a character in Stenders, or even a Stender marries a Corrie, and they live in Stenderland but occasionally reappear in Corrie when the Corrie one of them is visiting friends and relatives up there. Maybe they could go on holiday in the Yorkshire Dales, and turn up in Emmerdale's 'Woolpack' pub! Or would that be just too surreal and confusing?

    Your TV ideas?

You couldn't get Corrie and Eastenders to 'combine' because they run on rival channels. Outside of that the idea is good (but not new, even if so far it has been a case of 'spin offs' rather than combining existing progs).

The idea of incorporating the existence of the program into the lives of those in it (apart from the internal confusion of the characters then being people who are famous for being themselves) has the hazard of encouraging those viewers who already think it is real!!!!

How about a gardening programme called .................

Gardener's World, to be screened on a Friday evening about 8pm that was actually about gardening?

What about "Bash the Banker" the format would be like 60 min makeover, or Groundforce. But a group of retired Boxers turn up at a Banking office in Canary Wharf and beat everyone they find there.

Love your ideas, StephenH, not sure if they're workable, but love them all the same.

                  Thanks!

Damn 'Red Dwarf' for pinching my idea! Story of my life: I had the idea for in-line roller-skates back in the 70s. If I'd patented it, I'd be a millionaire now. As it is, some other sod came up with the same idea and actually did something about it.

Have you read the Books? They are even funnier than the series - and really clever too!
