Default Sweets

I was musing while walking home from the bus stop, having eaten some floral drops on said bus. Do the sweets we choose tell people as much about us as say our avatars? What fond childhood memories do we have of these things?

We have one of those sweet shops near us that stocks stuff in jars as well as pick and mix and some of the more interesting penny lines. Although they generally cost more than that these days. I am slowly working my way through the stock (I don't do diets ).

They generally have a good selection of "old-fashioned" sweets and so I am currently sampling Ginger Creams (like m&s mint crumbles but wonderfully gingery and much creamier), winter warmers (lots of lovely clove and cinnamon flavours), a wonderful smooth, chewy licorice toffee and the above-mentioned floral gums. This lot will last me a fortnight or so.

I may have to sample the Cola Cubes as I've not had those in years and the Pineapple Chunks.

So what would be your choice? What is your fondest memory of (sweet wise)? Do you think this says anything about you other than you have a sweet tooth and don't care about the calories?

nice tread EB.
We've just lost our local tobacconist and sweetie shop. 40 years father and son, and it closed just before Christmas - Boo hoo
I've only just got back into sweeties really after I stopped smoking last year. I like Werthers at the moment, but Mr MB is into Polo mints.
Have got some fruit drops and some winter warmer cough sweets (a bit strong) too but am trying not to eat too many.

My other thought on this was, as I also bought some Cough Candy Twists, which I adore was.....

Why and how do they go all sticky within minutes (well ok a couple of hours - so I exaggerated) of being weighed out but are fine in the jar?

moisture and temperature? I actually like it when you've kept sweeties for a while and they start to go soft, like wherthers originals after a few weeks.

Oooh, this takes me back. Used to love Sherbet Lemons (obviously), American hardgums and those black penny chews (think they were called Mojo!) No idea what this says about me, I'd still eat the two former; but reserve judgement on the Mojos as seem to remember they would give you a black tongue - not a great look over the age of 10. DH can usually be won over with a bag of Flying Saucers.... and he's the least spaced out person I know.

The great thing about flying saucers is that they stick to the inside of your mouth which can cause rather a lot of hilarity. Not quite chubby bunny stuff though.

Sherbert dips are one thing you don't find in many places these days , I think they did away with the liquorice 'straws'. I remember the Mojo's - didn't they make your tongue blue?
Shrimps were a fave for me when I was 7, but they don't taste the same anymore!!

There are a couple of site on the net that sell old fashioned sweets and there is a chain of 3 shops in Canterbury and Whitstable that just sell sweets out of jars.
When ever we visit the brother-in-law I normall pop in for the 1/4lb...of about 20 jars....Mainards Wine Gums and second would be sweet peanuts.

Bits of rock (as in Blackpool rock) and hard boiled sweets (like fruit flavours, pear drops etc), all in a jar together, so you get a mix of sweets.

No idea why its called "Yorkshire Mix" though! That's what it said on the jar

I'll look out for that on my next foray into my local sweet shop.

Clove Rock and bulls Eyes. Oh, and Cleeves toffee. We used to buy it by the square when coming home from school. Each square cost a 1/2 penny. It would last all the way home.

Rhubarb and Custards are my favourite - there's a small shop here that still has all the old sweets in big glass jars. Mind you the new range of Shetland Fudge is just heavenly - ate rather a lot of it over Christmas!

I'm a choccy girl rather than sweeties - as is Dexter the dog! (I'm a cruel mum he's only allowed the smallest of pieces as it's not good for him!) DDL

We lived in the sticks - and I mean the sticks. There was no sweetie shop. Well actually, there was no shop within 20 miles. And my mother did not approve of sweets. They would rot your teeth and give you bad skin - and that was just if you looked at them. But , treat of treats, on a Saturday afternoon, we got a bar of McGowans Highland Toffee (cost 3d = 1.25p) between 4 of us. A whole 2 squares each. Then because we had ruined our appetites by eating sweets all day it was brown bread and fruit for Saturday night tea.
What sweets do I like now ? None. Never acquired the taste . Guess I had a deprived childhood.

Oh Alice, you poor thing! A friend of mine is Scottish and her mother was extremely like that (she still is actually!) When visiting her grandchildren some years ago, offered them half a biscuit each when they came home from school.

We were allowed some boiled sweeties on Friday when I was little, but as soon as I went to school in town (and there was a sweetie shop) I started finding all sorts that I liked. Probably explains why I'm overweight now!
