  • Strangest recipe ever?

    Thanks to Sarzwiz, I'm now the proud owner of a couple of books by Mary Norwak and Babs Honey - Farmhouse Cooking Books one and two.

    I love reading old recipe books, to see how things were cooked in the past. Here are a couple of the strangest recipes I've ever read:

    Rook Pie/Potted Rook and, wait for it - those of a delicate nature look away now: Dorset Lambs Tail Pie! YUK! I kid you not!

    What is the strangest recipe you've ever come across?

    PS If anyone wants to know the details just say and I'll post them in the Kitchen section.

    Close to you is/was a pub called THE FIVE BARRED GATE this place was done in the 60s for using rook instead of chicken in their pies

        Very strange and very vile - Balut Egg - description below....

        A balut is a fertilized duck (or chicken) egg with a nearly-developed embryo inside that is boiled and eaten in the shell.

        If you Wiki this you wil see how vile it is. Think it may have been one of Keith Floyd's progs where I first came across this. Now I must stop writing/thinking about it or I'll be si.......too late!

            Well.... they didn't waste anything. In those books is a wealth of info. Sheep's tails are docked when they are lambs to fatten the sheep and stop all the fat being stored in the tail. With the waste not want not attitude, wakes perfect sense. Growing up oxtail was a family favourite. So stands to reason lambs tail would be good too. The tail is after all covered in skin etc. Where I grew up mopane worms were a delicacy Gonimbrasia belina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

              "Scripture Cake", where all the ingredients are biblical references, and you're supposed to look up the scripture to find out what to put in it... as if you could be bothered getting your bible all covered in cake mix, instead of just using the next recipe along in the book?!

                  I'd eat the rook pie and the lamb's tails. Balut egg, not so much

                  I have a Gourmet Game recipe book that includes such things as Marinated Elk, Gazelle With Mangoes & Cashews and Spiced Bear.

                  I'm a sucker for 'farmhouse kitchen' type books though. One of my faves doesn't even credit an author/compiler, just says it's collected from 'country housewives'. Just a few of it's delights are Turnip Au Gratin, Cowslip Mead, Broom Wine, Gooseberry Ketchup, Curried Macaroni, Greasy Skins, Mint & Egg Pie, Pig's Head Pudding and Nastirtium Sauce

                    Greasy Skins???? And that's supposed to sound appetising?!

                        Hem, hem, RT, what are you implying?

                        Sarz, it's this book (gwan, a penny + postage, you know you want to ). To be fair the recipe is intended to help 'greasy skins' not provide ways to cook them

                          LOL Seahorse... was just saying you coulda found a gem that was published pre ISBN numbers....

                            LMAO that makes a lot more sense Although having eaten some of my Nan's roasts, I did wonder if that's where she'd found the recipe...

                            BTW, you are evil, and I shall tell the OH that you made me look...
