  • Strange phobias?

Do you have any weirdy ones?

I have arachnophobia (2 lots of couselling, some exposure therapy and hypnotherapy have helped it a bit sut still not cured. But this is really vooom, no 4 or something on the top 10 list.

I also have mild emetophobia - fear of being sick. I am terrible at this and will go to great lengths to avoid doing so. Includng not even drinking water for hours if have sick bug. (yes I know that's a stupid thing to do)

I also have a dirt one which I am not sure if it has a name. For example I can't touch a bin without wearing gloves and have real trouble with other people's dirt, and touching things when I don't know what's been on them.

Does anyone have any good ones? Like fear of cabbages? Or baked beans?

I'm scared of mascots (like the ones with big heads at football matches)... I get completely freaked out if someone in that kind of costume comes near me.

I was chased by Welliphant a few years ago, and was so terrified, I vaulted over a 4ft metal gate and locked myself in work's cash office for 3 hours - I was sobbing the whole time.

Of course, everyone thinks it's hilarious, but from my point of view, it's really not!

Love it Glutton, although must be terrifynig I can imagine. There must be a name for this...and if not can we make one up?
Maybe it's the same one as clowns? Do they scare you as well? My children don't like clowns.

I find large metal structures quite freaky. For example, I had to pass a wrecked, rusty oil tanker in a field with my eyes shut. I also find large expanses of sail scary - I'd be useless on a sailing ship. Strange this, since I find sailing ships fascinating but only on the page. I don't imagine either of these has a fancy name.

PS just checked the above list and I have nameless phobias!

Not sure if this is right, but:
                  Metallophobia - Fear of metal
Batophobia- Fear of heights or being close to high buildings
                  so
Metallobatophobia - Fear of being close to tall metal buildings?

Well "Velum" is latin for a sail so perhaps:
                  Velumophobia - Fear of sails.
It's not specific about large sails though as I'd imagine it's the size of them rather than the fact that they're 'a' sail.

I'm still pretty creeped out by the dark. I always think someone is lurking in the shadows. But then, this is a totally rational fear as everyone knows that the dark is where the monsters live!
                  (Achluophobia - Fear of darknes)

Nope, other metal things are ok. And not buildings. It's of things soaring above me - even just a bit above me. But not buildings I think!

I don't think I have any, or at least I haven't run screaming from any thing lately.
                        Does that make me freaky?

Goodness, this thread is even more freaky than the OCD one the other week! Think my brain is too logical to have irrational fears eg in the UK spiders are harmless therefore not worth worrying about (and they kill flies so all good ) but if I was lived somewhere like Austrailia then I'd probably not be too keen on them.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

According to QI; no-one has died of a spider bite in Australia since 1981
