  • Sony Walkman - Itunes??

Can't believe I'm asking about MP3 technology on a gardening website - but there seems to be such a wide breadth of knowledge here - I'm sure someone can explain this.

I've be given a Sony walkman MP3 player "SONY NWZ-A729 16GB WALKMAN" - new, boxed etc - how on earth do I buy tunes off the internet? - can I use Itunes or is that for Apples only (there is a horticultural thread to this question!) or is there another website, or do I have to convert them, or do they all work on the same machines?

This appears in the blurb.... can anyone make any sense of it?

    MP3/WMA/AAC Audio Codec Support
Supports playback of MP3 and WMA DRM and non-DRM audio files downloaded from multiple sources. Also supports non-DRM AAC content, giving you multiple options for downloading music the way you want.

Is there some out there who's up to date and down with the kidz - who can help?

    Thanks

    Jimmer

Buy mp3 files from Amazon, they are quite a good price.

    Amazon.co.uk: MP3 store - DRM-free MP3 music downloads

itunes is Apple specific, but I think you can use the itunes software to enable them to play on any mp3 player.

DRM means digital rights management and is the copyright protection built in to the files so you can't copy them further and distribute them freely. But if they are DRM-free then ther is no copyright restircition.

WMA is windows media audio so you can use the Windows media player to play and transfer the downloaded files to your walkman.

some people buy albums from eBay, burn them to their MP3 player, then resell the album back on eBay.

I think it breaches copyright laws though

As I understand it Itunes AAC files are all DRM so you wont be able to play them on the Sony without first removing the DRM protection Which apparently is illegal but achievable

              I've removed the P2P discussions, I don't think they're relative here

Can I recommend 7Digital? I get lots of my music from there
7digital MP3 Music Downloads ? The Home of MP3 Downloads

I avoid iTunes, and anything iPod related, I hate the way they tie things up so that their stuff only works with their stuff We only have Creative mp3 players in this house, and they'll play anything you throw at them

EDIT: Jimmer, you should have gotten some software with your mp3 player, that is what you usually have to use to put tunes onto the player - you download music into a specific file on your PC and then the software finds it, converts it if necessary, and loads it on to the player.

Another thing a lot of people do is that you can "rip" any CDs you already have, creating an mp3 file of each track which you can then load onto your mp3 player.
There are 10 kinds of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't.

yeah it appears so.. i do just feel the need to say though that if this is the worst crime those millions of people are ever going to commit then the world would be a much safer place

sorry mod, i know you'll delete it

I knew you lot would be able to help out - seems there are loads of places to get these MP3s - I had a horribly feeling I'd got an obsolete bit of 'non Ipod' equipment.

Thankyou all for your help... even if some of it seemed to be a little 'controversial'!!

I too have a Sony Walkman MP3 and I usually 'rip' CDs, to the MP3 format with Windows Media Player, then just 'drag and drop' straight onto the player via my PC.

In plain English that means I put a conventional CD into my PC, open the Windows Media Player programme that is integral within Windows, then click on the 'Rip' button. This copies and converts the CD tracks into the MP3 format that the Walkman needs and puts these new music files into your My Music folder.

Connect the Walkman to the computer via its USB connector, then open two copies of My Computer. With each My Computer window side by side you can locate your now converted MP3 files in the folder called My Music in one window and 'see' the Walkman in the other. Locate the Music on the Walkman and simple drag and drop the MP3s from the PC to your new gadget!

                      Have fun!

I use iTunes on my PC, so it isn't just for Macs. You can also copy mp3s from iTunes to CD, by moving the files to Windows Media Player. I very rarely buy from the iTunes website - I just load up to the iTunes library in the software I downloaded and use iTunes to sync my iPod. Easy peasy!

You dont need to rip CD to convert to mp3 format, there are a lot of programs that you can download to convert to mp3, I also use mediamonkey instead of Windows media and that allows you to convert for free for a limited time, purchase of a license key allows unlimited conversion plus its a good music player.

TEB - Yes I do realise that, but from Jimmer's original posting I got the impression that he/she wasn't too sure how to deal with this 'new technology', so I've gone a simple route without the need to download additional software. Actually, on the Walkman installation disk is the Yahoo Media Suite, but it's pretty big and intimidating for the uninitiated!
