| A folk song called Dancing at Whitsun. It's about the number of girls after the first world war who were left without boyfriends/husbands. Another - Willie McBride. Similar theme - futility of war. Someone asking permission of Willie McBride to rest by his grave - and further thoughts on the young lad's death in wartime. That theme sets me off every time.

| Oh, Flum, have to agree there! The version of William McBride I have is by June Tabor and it gets me every time. Also her version of 'Now I'm Easy' (both written by Eric Bogle, I believe). Joan Baez's 'Diamonds and Rust' is bittersweet for me and Kate Bush's 'Woman's Work' generally has me reaching for a hankie.

| Willie McBride gets me everytime, just like the rest of you. I only ever heard two versions, the first one done by The Fureys, who I love. The second version was sung by a friend one night during a lock-in in our local pub after hours (tut tut!). I'd known him for some time, and had no clue he could sing. He sang it unaccompanied and faultlessly from beginning to end, amid complete silence from us and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. The only other one that really gets me is Highland Cathedral - it has to be performed by massed pipes and drums for the effect - never fails to give me goosebumps and reduce me to tears. It's a beautiful tune and the words behind it are full of such meaning.

| As beefy has already mentioned - Johnny Cash's version of Hurt always brings a lump to my throat - especially the video, you know it was pretty much the last time he and June "performed" together. Another song I find hard to listen to is Robbie Williams "Nan's Song". YouTube - Robbie Williams - Nan'S Song It pretty much describes the relationship I had with my own Nan who died 4 years ago. We played it at her funeral. (I've even had to mute the YouTube link 'cos I started welling up!)

| Since Brian died 2 1/2 years ago, quite a lot of songs can set me off but the major one is "Unchained Melody". I was in a house share with two fellow students when we started going out together and my fellow housemates were into "Soldier, soldier" so were always playing the Robson & Jerome version. Willy McBride is a very evocative song. Mine, my OH's family and most of my working life have been spent with the military. As such I have lost family members and friends to conflicts. The "War to end wars" then it happened "again and again and again". I've just listened to it again and the words are "War to end war" Janie

| Going to have a second go at this ...... Roy Bailey's New Years Eve, a great love song and for this forum .......... Tom Paxton, Whos Garden Was This, what we all may be facing in the future if we're not careful and which this place, if no other, really tries to do something about.

| the northern lights of old aberdeen, because I am a scot living in england but my heart is up north. I spent 7 years in studying and working in aberdeen and it just feels like home when I go back. eva cassidy's version of fields of gold because it was played at my cousins funeral last year, still haven't been able to listen to it yet. and scotland the brave played by massed pipe bands. the pipes just move me in my core somehow. |

| Anyone know the song that goes 'I remember Dublin City in the rare old times' (I don't, but the song is a real lump-in-the-throater for me.)
