Why do French beans squeak when you eat them?

  • #2
That's cos you haven't cooked them right!

How do you cook a non-squeaky bean? Runner beans don't squeak - only French ones

I'm gonna guess it's to do with the water content of the bean itself

VC, I bet you are either leaving them whole or simply chopping them straight across ? try a little experiment, cook one pan in your usual way & at the same time cook another pan that are cut diagonally.
I think you will find those cut diagonally will not squeek, let me know if it works please.

Thanks for that totally unrelated answer, Nicos.

I'm a bit worried about one of the posts on the physicsforum

I cut them diagonally, into diamond shapes with scissors - 'cos diamonds are a bean's best friend.

I was actually wondering about the mineral content mentioned causing the squeak factor?...maybe?...
