  • Slugs and Tyres

I had some hostas that were constantly being eaten by slugs. It was as if they were a magnet for the rotten things.

When OH was redoing the garden this year, she said to get rid of the hostas but I though take them down to the allotments and perhaps they would attract the slugs away from my crops.

As I did not want to waste valuable bed space, I popped them into a tyre and left them to it. My neighbour even commented that perhaps it would draw the slugs away.

Well look at them, not a bit of slug damage.

So it begs the question of whether slugs and snails don't like climbing tyres.

Certainly my carrots and beets have had no damage either.

Has anyone else had experience of this?

In my old garden I had several Hostas, I kept them well-mulched with sharp stones, and had no problem until the last few years when the stones had begun to sink into the soil, then the slimeys found their way in!

I grow carrots and courgettes in tyres and dont have slug damage at all, although when I come to reuse them the following season, they seemed to have rehomed them over winter! Now I know your Hostas have survived, think I will give them a try at home as mine have been savaged!

The other thing is that I put them in there months ago before they had even sprouted and I haven't watered them, just left them to their own devices.

And many congratulations to you by the way, see you are our new MOM.
