  • SLUGS - another suggested trap

Just read this on a delphinium website - they use this as a slug trap

''Another good trap is to place a half of either grapefruit or melon skin with the flesh removed. Place them upside down on the ground; here the slugs gather over night; these can be collected the next morning and disposed of''

I still find the best method of controlling slugs is to attract predators into the garden, i have a small water feature with frogs in it, some logs and leaves at bottom of garden to attract hedgehogs and I don't put bird feeders out so they eat the slugs instead, i do have a bird bath to attract the birds, i will put feed out for the birds when the growing season is over.

Before I did the above none of the methods I found anywhere was effective and they only way was to go out 1.00am at night and pick them of my veg and flowers put them in a plastic sealed bag and then in the bin, as if you just chuck them over the fence they find their way back.

Now I hardly get any slug damage at all, and I have loads of plants slugs love like Hosta's. lettuce etc.

i would suggest that putting food out for the birds encourages them when you need them most ....... like now when theres loads of slugs, and if you feed them now, they are less likely to eat your crops ........ i put all the slugs and snails i find in a large flat dish, with vaseline and salt round the edge ...... then they stay around looking for more ...... if you don't put food out for them, they will find someone who does

if you use the grapefruit thing ..... what do you do with the grapefruit, do they eat that or just the skin? cos i hate grapefruit
