  • Slowness loading this site?

Does anyone else have problems loading this site. It seems to take ages for the adverts to load before you can post or change to another thread. Then you have to scroll down before you can look at the threads. Is it a problem with my broadband or do others have a problem.

Don't usually have a problem Catrina. There was a problem a few weeks ago but the super techie guys seemed to sort it out. I have noticed a problem after midnight when the whole thing goes like a snail, but not otherwise.
    See what others say.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

The greatness comes not when things go always good for you,but the greatness comes when you are really tested, when you take, some knocks, some disappointments;because only if youv'e been in the deepest valley can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain.

It is a drawback of being a popular site with lots of members, guests and posts.
Always thank people who have helped you immediately, as they may not be around to thank later.

If you have a slow connection or a slow PC, pictures (ads) can really slow you down. One way to speed up browsing is to not download the picture info.
              To do this:
Click on TOOLS (menu bar at top of screen)
              Then click INTERNET OPTIONS
              Then click ADVANCED
and scroll down to MULTIMEDIA and deselect 'show pictures'.
              Then click APPLY
In fact the more you deselect in MULTIMEDIA, the faster your PC will work on a web page.
You can change these settings as and when you want, so if you want to look at a picture, just reselect 'show pictures'.
Get to know your PC, it's all there to help you.

"It seems to take ages for the adverts to load before you can post or change to another thread"

Yes, there is a bottleneck on this page for the advert at the top (although I don't notice a great delay, there is a delay none the less, sometimes longer than others, and whatever they do just after midnight cripples the site and makes it unusable for 15 minutes or more - most probably the thread-subscription-bulk-mail I expect)

Instead of just loading an image for the "Grow Your Own Sponsor" some advertisement management software is called, which presumably does some thinking about what to display etc. and logging who has seen which advert. Either way, that is probably the most heavily used bit of logic on the system, was probably "thrown together" [relative to the whole forum software thing which I expect has been carefully tuned and optimised]. The annoying thing is that it always displays the same image so the whole "advertisement management thingie" is moot and could just be a static image, changed once a month.

Because it is a "program" rather than an "image" your PC cannot cache/record it to use on other pages, your PC goes to get it every time.

I've no idea why they have done it that way, but it would be a good idea if they changed it

By the by, in case it helps, I do the following:

Use the "News" menu option, or the "Quick links : Today's posts". Scroll to the bottom (and carry on through the pages until I get to the Date / Time of my last viewing).

Work up from the bottom looking for threads that I have replied to ( icon to the left), or that I remember viewing / being interested in - or that I have not read and the title looks interesting!

Right-click the icon and choose "Open in new tab" (***)

Then work up the list to the next thread I am interested in.

When I get to the top of the page, and IF I'm not already on the first page, I press BACK to get to the next-earlier page.

While that is loading I click on the first tab that I opened. By now it is fully loaded and I don't have to wait.

Read / reply to that thread. Close tab. Proceed to next tab.

When all tabs done return to the "New /Today posts" tab and work up the list again.

When I get to the top of the first page I go and do something else!

(***) You will need to set your browser to NOT switch to the new tab when it opens. Thus you will stay on the page where you are after opening the thread in its new tab

Thanks Kirsten I think I will have to print that off and read it through again. But I will try it. The advert at the top of the page drives me made because I dont read it but I have to scroll down past it every time which is a pain. Perhaps someone !!! could look into changing it.

If you can find a way to block

                            and

that should do the trick. (Both return an image DocType)
