  • should have cost..actually cost.....

Thought it'd be very satisfying to start a thread on our meals- comparing what it would have cost if bought as fresh in the supermarket- compared to the actual cost including 'free' home grown foods...

Tonight we ate a Swiss Chard quiche =£1 in total for eggs/cream/milk/onion/Swiss chard and slice of tomato.
    Free Beetroot and lettuce.
Raspberries( free) and cream = 20p....supper for 2 = £1.30 max...and quiche and lettuce left oover for lunch for 1 person

I had omelette too. Cost of eggs was two portions of spuds, (barter with chick owning friend) potatoes free from garden, about 50p for some cheese, bargain!

We had Toad-in-the-hole, it cost £1.97 for the sausages and a few pence for a splash of milk and a little flour for the Yorkshire pudding, let's say £2.25 altogether, we used our own eggs. We ate it with home-grown new potatoes, broccoli, peas and carrots, If I'd had to buy the potatoes, veg and take into account the cost of 3 organic eggs it would have added at least another £4.50 to the total, so a meal for 4 adults for £2.25 instead of £6.75.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

We had fish (£9 for enough for 6 people) and everything else was home grown (potatoes; cauli, broccoli, mangetout. Breadcrumbs for fish were from left over home made bread and pudding was rhubarb and raspberry crumble (rhubarb & raspberry home grown and rhubard grown from seed so even cheaper!), with some left over pavlova (eggs from girls and raspberries from plot). So whole meal = £9.00 but if ingredients bought from supermarket, i'd hate to think...maybe about £20?

I was in Lidl yesterday and checked the price of their raspberries - £1.99 for a paltry tub. I've eaten almost as many straight off the canes this week, let alone the ones we've had for tea.
                Today's mistake is tomorrow's compost...

Icecream at 14p a portion, organic too!

So today had salad from allotment - mayonnaise 10p?
Scotch eggs at 35p, courtesy of my hens and sausages from the reduced shelf
Redcurrants from the allotment and yoghurt, 50p.

                  so 95p for lunch.

                  Sue

Don't know what it would cost to buy veg and eggs though.

We had burgers with a veggie pie dish (part cooked cauli, broccoli, yellow courgette with thickly sliced part cooked potato layered over the top and cheese sauce poured over the top with a bit more grated cheese and fresh breadcumbs sprinkled over). Baked in the over for 20 mins at 220.....so total cost was about £2 quid I'd imagine......too stuffed to move now!
