  • shall we do our own Virtual Veg Show?

there seems to be a lot of interest in another virtual veg show, but I suspect the Administrators are just too busy this year with other stuff.

shall we run our own informal show (no prizes).

    what about something like this:
    1) start a thread called "best French beans" (a different thread for each category of veg)
    2) have a rule, like: 6 beans on a white plate
    3) post your best photo of your best French beans
    4) label your photo with the variety

no chat or going off-topic on these Show Threads, just photos.

Could be a good idea Two_Sheds. Not that I have much to show yet, the only thing that is growing here is weeds (well, the Alderman peas are doing okay too).

Just spotted the first tomato forming so it will be a while before I have any of those to photograph!

Sounds good to me, but how do we keep all the photos together but separate if you know what I mean. Do we need a new forum, or a new thread, or what?? Just need something worth photographing now (and to find my camera)

If you can hang fire for a few more days, this is still under discussion at admin level!
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

As Seahorse says, can you give us a few more days?

But if the VFVS show doesn't go ahead this year there's no reason why you guys don't run your own and post your starter threads in the Fruit and Veg Showcase Board, with similarly named threads like VFVS: Runner beans 2008; VFVS: Best berries 2008 - that kind of thing.

You'd need to think of how the judging would go etc... I can't depart much advice there as I wasn't part of the judgng team soz...

Buuuut, give us a couple more days grace and take photos where you think a prize winner would be

Seems to me that the worst prob Admin had last year - apart from setting up the category threads etc (time consuming?), and the judging (not a job I'd fancy!) - was the allocation of prizes & the non-delivery of some of them. Lots of us have already said that we would be happy to forgoe (sp?) real prizes, and go for virtual ones (ie a banner added similar to MOM banner?). If this would make some difference to the decision, please could you raise it Seahorse/Shortie?

If we do end up setting up our own version, once the entries are all in, would it be possible to set up a 'poll' thread for each category, with each entry having a number & name of entrant, so we could all be the judge/jury? Or do polls have a limited number of possible 'answers'?

That's a good idea Two Sheds. I was thinking along those lines myself. But as the Mods say, it's still up for consideration so we could give it another week and see what happens.

Just checked, and the maximum number of options/answers for a poll is 10. So I guess that wouldn't work

why not have someone (? from admin/gyo) to produce eventual shortlists of ten for us all to vote on? I know it's a bit of work for someone but it's just a thought.

OK Mods, we'll give you a week. It would be better if you lot could organize it - you know how to do it from last year. I think the general feeling from the Vine is that we just want a show, not real prizes. Most of us would be happy to have a virtual rosette.

Admin must be rushed off their collective feet just now - they haven't even given SBP the MOM banner. Shame.
