  • School Summer Fayre - Green Theme

We're planning a Green theme for the school Summer Fayre (Primary age) and we are hoping to get the children to grow lots of herbs to sell. Could anyone recommend a good place to buy seeds for this ie: not too expensive but still reliable?

It would be awful for the children to put in loads of effort and for nothing to come up!

    Thanks

I could have sent you loads of Parsley seed ... but my crop failed last year.

Do you mean Green as in the colour, or as in Eco?

PM me with an address and I will send you a plethora when I get back home towards the end of Feb. Dont need to be spending cash, the education budgets are stretched badly enough as it is.

I'd have thought places like Lidl, Netto, Aldi might have cheap seeds to buy?

What a star! Thank you! I will PM you the school address if that's ok (so you'll know I wasn't just asking for myself!)

The theme is 'Green' as in 'Eco', the aim is to green the school environment with the money raised and develop stronger links with the local community - plans are already underway for a school veg patch, they have saved enough Morrisons vouchers for a small greenhouse and are hoping to make a bee garden/wildlife habitat.

The children have an Eco Committee, which will be organising the herb planting and the sale. We are also planning displays about marine conservation (although we're a loooong way from the sea ) and local wildlife reserves. We're going to ask the children to make birdfeeders out of old plastic bottles and to design their own cloth bags to use instead of carriers...lots of ideas, so little time!

*whispers* this is a really good idea, are you happy for me to 'pinch' it for our school? It's miles and miles away, so no competition I'm on the PTA (well, as its Wales it's the Cyfeillion, but you didn't need to know that unpronouncable name did you ), and new ideas always needed!

Erm, I've just realised that you don't actually say where you are - I just kinda assume folk are miles away from me, as most of them are (apart from Shirl!), so if you're actually just down the road, I'll fully understand if you don't want a copy cat situation!

What sort of seeds do you think you`d need?

Phew, that was a quick reply! Well, I need to ask people about it first, as they might give it the big pancake ....That was, if you did mean me?

Pipscariad, if your unpronouncable school council thingy let you go ahead with the idea, pm me with your school address and I will send you some stuff over as well. I'm all in favour of kids getting stuck into gardening and seeing where their food actually comes from.
Forgot to say though, the majority of mine will be French, so it will be a double test, translation and growing.

Sorry - I've put my location now! We're in Malvern (not too far, but far enough)

Of course you can nick the idea - it's the first year we've thought of doing it and so I can't guarantee it'll work but you never know. I'm chair of our Friends so if you need other ideas, just drop me a line and I'll send you some!

Thank you to all you kind people out there!

Oo, thank you everso much, Monsieur Leponge! (My three children are big Spongebob fans, and I think of you now when they watch them ). The translation element would be an extra educational bonus to try and convince folk.

Thanks for the kind offer of seeds, Sharonr, if it gets off the ground I'll let you know.

Thank you too to Pootle, that's really kind of you to offer ideas, I shall PM you shortly about it. We do get stuck for ideas!

I'm going now, as this in danger of becoming an award acceptance speech, wiv all these thank you's!

You can buy seeds of the 'bog-standard' stuff from supermarkets for about 40p or 50p a pack. They're usually reliable and even though they don't sell the exotic ones, the ones they do sell are those which are most popular.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.
