| Just wondering how much swiss chard is in the shops as they don't sell it in my town as been my first year i'm going to keep records to see if the produce coming out of the lottie is covering the amount spent. i don't mind if price per kg or lbs or classed as no organic i just need a rough guide to do the calculations.

| Am growing it myself for the first time this year. Looking forward to the results. Believe its similar to leaf beet/spinach.

| Iv,e just cut my first leaves of the white variety and the leaves taste like spinach and the stacks like celery , no i,m not doing labour time as i would not be paid to shop , or anything to complicated just a weight times price calculations as we spend about £1000 a year on fruit and veg and would like to see what contribution it makes to this bill as we will never be totally self sufficant as the plot is not big enough.

| Once we started cropping last year, I didn't have to go to market for ages. When I did I was absolutely horrified at the price of things. T hat's why we are planting as much as possible this year, and have a 3/4 share in a chest freezer which is in our shed. Butternut Squash - 1.99 each in Sainsburys!!! Seeds less than £2 a packet (I think)

| Don't think I've every seen chard (Swiss or otherwise!) in the supermarket and not that often at the market.

| Supermarkets don't seem to stock it, I believe because it doesn't have a long enough "shelf life" and will look limp and uninviting too quickly. The only place I can get it is at the organic farmers market and they charge a pound a bag, bag probably half size of a carrier bag. Last edited by serenity; 07-05-2007 at 08:31 AM. |

| The only places i've seen it down here are the little deli/organic shop in Dorking where it was £2.99 a bunch last year and between leaves and stems that gave us two meals worth (for 2 adults and one child). And the farmers markets where it is deffo more expensive than serenity's. It is everywhere in France etc. they love it.

| The only time I've seen it, and other more 'unusual' veg, was when we tried the organic veg box scheme last year. Bit difficult to work out what the price for each veg would be, as it's a standard price for the box with different stuff in each week. It worked out flummin expensive, I know that, which is why we don't do it anymore! http://www.farmaroundnorth.co.uk/ This is where we got our deliveries from, might be some help with costing/calculations?
