power cut

I have a small camping stove & whistling kettle just for when the power goes out (which it does here pretty frequently) as my cooker is all electric. I can easily make one pot meals on it too, so the kids don't get takeaway in a power cut any more

Power cuts - tell me about them. We have lived here for more than 35 years. If I had �1 for every power cut in that time I would not need to win the lottery. We have had at least four today,

We live in the village of Alton, opposite Alton Towers, and we had to watch the adverts for what 'Midland Electricity' was doing for the funfair, but was doing nothing for us.

A flash of lightening, a gust of wind, a fleck of snow, and our power was OFF. Usually for several hours.

When we moved into this property we were all electric. There were many nights in winter, when we got home from work - no electricity, so we couldn't even boil a kettle of water.

Things have improved slightly, but we are not much better than a third world banana republic when it comes to electricity supply.

Gee Whiz ! That's terrible. I thought power cuts were a thing of the past.
40 years ago when I lived in the West Highlands power cuts were fairly regular and I was all prepared for them. Now I can't remember when I last had a power cut.
What's going on ?

I collect oil lamps, old ones and most of them still work OK, I keep saying that when we have a power cut this will be the best lit house in the town - but- we haven't had a power cut for years. Moral of the story - start collecting oil lamps!!!!!

We used to get power cuts in Orkney, and there was no gas available except bottled. Rayburn to the rescue!
Eventually we got a generator for the freezers. Came in useful the time power went off at 11.30am Christmas morning! Ran the genny for 2 hours that evening, and loaned it 2 hours each to 2 neighbours next morning. Power came back at 6pm Boxing Day.
Not everyone on the island got a Christmas dinner that year, but most had either a solid fuel cooker or a bottled gas one....

I get the occasional power cut at home, maybe one or 2 a year, but here its a regular occurance.
It doesnt normally bother me hugely, as it means I dont have to do any work and can nip off to the golf course, but, working for a massive multi billion dollar conglomerate as I do, they cant seem to find a few dollars to buy me a new computer. Every time the power goes off, my computer turns off about 0.0782 seconds afterwards, losing any work that I am currently doing. Frustrating??? Not much!!!

Maybe it's the age of the equipment round this area? I'm only about 10 miles up the road from you Butter Fingers and we get 2 or 3 cuts a year, but we didn't have one on Tuesday.

I have my desktop computer at home plugged into an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), it only gives me about 20 minutes extra power, but it's more than enough to do a graceful shutdown and not lose anything I was working on.

We have a UPS here as well HotStuff, but this lappy wont even run on that, it has to be full power or nothing. Not frustrating enough.

We have power cuts througout the year, and at odd times. On Monday morning, woke to find the power had been out during the night. Not windy, not raining (we wish!), no snow - just random. We're all electric too - no gas in our hamlet.

There is a gas heater in the garage, and I love candlelight - but so far haven't had to try to cook a dinner on the camping stove!

We had a power cut the other day cos the transformer up the valley had burst into flames - something to do with the high temperatures the power company said! We get them a lot in the winter cos of the low temperatures! I wouldn't mind, but it's not like we go from minus 80 to plus 40 degrees up here!!

We're getting a woodburning stove/cooker fr that very reason.
When we had the storms the other week the electricity was off for 24 hrs- fortunately we have a 25yr old calor gas type cooker which hardly works....but I was thrilled to be able to cook still without the electricty.

Not had a power cut in winter yet...that should be fun!

It did take 8 days for the internet ( computer and phone) to get sorted.
My main worry was all the stuff in the 2 freezers

...we'd of had to distribute it to the whole village had it defrosted! ( I'm already freezing this years fruit and veg...can you imagine having to chuck it all away after all that hard work in the garden and kitchen??????)
