| I love so many different poems for so many different reasons, but my favourite has to be Leisure, by William Henry Davies What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. No time to stand beneath the boughs And stare as long as sheep or cows, No time to see, when woods we pass, Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass. No time to see, in broad daylight, Streams full of stars, like skies at night. No time to turn at Beauty's glance And watch her feet, how they can dance. No time to wait til her mouth can Enrich the smile her eyes began A poor life this if full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. Just love it. There are several others who deserve an honourable mention. The one I posted for SS, Twelve Songs (Stop all the clocks) by W.H.Auden, Warning by Jenny Joseph, The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe (as performed by Homer Simpson !!!!!) and The Ballad of Reading Gaol by Oscar Wilde. There lots of others but these would be my faves.

| The Seasons Sun The Winter's sun Is rare and weak Better to curl up And go to sleep The spring sun Shines bright and clear Takes away the cold Dark winters fear The summers sun Burns hot and long But in a blink The seasons gone The autumn sun Is soft and warm A time for rest Calm, not forlorn Thanks for all the replies, they are great. | I too love the Ballad of Reading Gaol (and once put it to music!) I have several favourites, two of which are: Silver Slowly, silently, now the moon Walks the night in her silver shoon; This way, and that, she peers, and sees Silver fruit upon silver trees; One by one the casements catch Her beams beneath the silvery thatch; Couched in his kennel, like a log, With paws of silver sleeps the dog; From their shadowy coat the white breasts peep Of doves in a silver-feathered sleep; A harvest mouse goes scampering by, With silver claws, and silver eye; And moveless fish in the water gleam, By silver reeds in a silver stream. - Walter de la Mare Learnt this when I was 9, and : Song : Go and catch a falling star by John Donne GO and catch a falling star, Get with child a mandrake root, Tell me where all past years are, Or who cleft the devil's foot, Teach me to hear mermaids singing, Or to keep off envy's stinging, And find What wind Serves to advance an honest mind. If thou be'st born to strange sights, Things invisible to see, Ride ten thousand days and nights, Till age snow white hairs on thee, Thou, when thou return'st, wilt tell me, All strange wonders that befell thee, And swear, No where Lives a woman true and fair. If thou find'st one, let me know, Such a pilgrimage were sweet; Yet do not, I would not go, Though at next door we might meet, Though she were true, when you met her, And last, till you write your letter, Yet she Will be False, ere I come, to two, or three. ************* Despite the lack of faith in female constancy, I adore the use of language Donne uses in the first verse, especially the idea of 'get with child a mandrake root' Has anyone ever seen a mandrake by the way??
